Most Bradford White problems fall into recognizable symptom patterns. For ICON System diagnostic codes see our error codes hub. For warranty status check our warranty page.
The Bradford White intake filter problem — #1 issue
The biggest Bradford White-specific issue: blocked intake filter at the base of Defender / ICON units. This single issue causes the majority of "pilot won't stay lit" complaints on Defender tanks. The filter sits under the unit and traps lint, dust, and pet hair. Annual cleaning is required. See our Bradford White intake filter cleaning guide — this fixes more BW issues than thermocouple replacement does.
No hot water
Defender / ICON / RG gas: check pilot first. If out, run the intake filter cleaning procedure FIRST — clean filter resolves about 60% of pilot-out cases on Defender. If pilot still won't relight, then check thermocouple (see our thermocouple page).
M-I electric: trip the breaker and check the upper element first. Most "no hot water" calls on M-I electric trace to upper element failure or upper thermostat. See element replacement.
Infiniti GR tankless: check display. No display = power loss. Display + no hot water = inlet filter blocked (clean filter screen).
AeroTherm Heat Pump: check the mode setting on front panel. Default Hybrid mode; if accidentally Heat Pump Only in cold ambient, output can feel like no hot water.
Pilot won't stay lit on Defender
Sequence: (1) clean intake filter — this is the BW-specific step missing from generic troubleshooting (2) if still fails, replace thermocouple (3) if still fails, replace pilot assembly. Intake filter cleaning resolves 60% of these calls.
Water heater leaking
Top of tank = connection or T&P (repairable). Middle of tank = element gasket on electric (repairable). Bottom of tank = shell failure (replace). See warranty page for claim if covered.
Popping or rumbling sounds
Sediment in tank bottom. Flush annually. Bradford White does NOT include AO Smith's Hydrojet equivalent — so sediment management is purely manual flushing. See maintenance schedule.
ICON System diagnostic LED
ICON System units (M2I prefix) display fault codes via LED. See our Bradford White error codes hub for the complete code reference.
When to call a pro
DIY: intake filter cleaning, thermocouple, element, anode, drain valve, T&P. Pro: gas valve, ICON control board, AeroTherm compressor.
Bottom line
The Bradford White-specific intake filter is the issue Rheem and AO Smith troubleshooting guides won't mention. Clean it annually. For ICON codes see error codes hub.
