How to clean the intake filter — step by step
- Shut off gas supply at the unit's gas valve. Wait 5 minutes.
- Locate the intake filter — it's at the bottom of the unit, behind a metal grille or louvered cover. Look for a ring of small holes or slots around the lower circumference.
- Vacuum the exterior first — use a brush attachment on the vacuum to clear lint and dust from the louvers and grille.
- Remove the cleanout cap if your model has one (typically a 1/4-turn fitting at the very bottom of the unit, or sometimes accessed by removing the burner access door).
- Use compressed air or a vacuum to clear the filter screen — DO NOT use water (the filter must stay dry).

The FVIR design draws combustion air through the filter so any flammable vapors from a basement source (paint thinner, gasoline) are caught and the unit's safety interlock prevents combustion.
