On State standing-pilot gas water heaters, the thermocouple senses the pilot flame and generates a small voltage that keeps the gas valve\'s safety solenoid open. When the thermocouple weakens (carbon buildup, normal aging), pilot voltage drops below threshold and the gas valve closes — pilot won\'t stay lit. This is behind most 2 LED flash faults on State units.
Symptoms
- 2 LED flashes on gas valve
- Pilot lights but goes out when you release the gas knob
- Pilot stays lit briefly (10-60 seconds) then goes out
- Pilot flame visibly weak or yellow
Diagnostic before replacing
- Clean the intake screen first — 50% of "thermocouple" issues are actually intake restriction
- Verify pilot flame is properly enveloping the thermocouple tip (top ⅓ of the tip should be in steady blue flame)
- Test thermocouple voltage with a multimeter (millivolt setting): healthy thermocouple = 25-30 mV when pilot is lit
- Below 18 mV = replace
DIY replacement
- Turn gas knob to "Off"; wait 5 minutes for residual gas to dissipate
- Remove burner cover
- Disconnect the thermocouple lead from the gas valve (small nut, finger-tighten typically)
- Remove the thermocouple from its bracket near the pilot
- Slide new thermocouple into bracket — position so tip is in pilot flame envelope
- Connect lead to gas valve, hand-tight then quarter-turn with wrench (don\'t overtighten)
- Restore gas; light pilot per instructions on unit
- Hold gas knob in for 60 seconds after pilot lights to verify thermocouple holds
- Release knob; pilot should stay lit
Cost
- Universal thermocouple: $10-20
- OEM State/AO Smith thermocouple: $15-25
- Pro replacement: $100-200 (often combined with annual service call)
Lifespan
Standard thermocouples last 5-10 years. Faster failure on units in dusty environments (laundry rooms, garages) or hard-water regions.
Electronic ignition models don\'t have thermocouples
Newer State ProLine units with electronic ignition (no standing pilot) don\'t use thermocouples. The equivalent component is the flame sensor / flame rod. Diagnostic procedure is similar but the parts differ.
Bottom line
Thermocouple is the most common State gas part replacement. Clean the intake screen first; if that doesn\'t fix it, $15-25 thermocouple + 45 min DIY.
