The State gas valve is an integrated control assembly that handles thermostat, ECO, gas solenoid, FVIR sensor (if equipped), and the LED indicator. When 7 LED flashes appears, the gas valve has detected an internal fault. Replacement is dealer-installed.
What the gas valve does
- Controls gas flow to the burner via solenoid
- Controls pilot gas (standing pilot models)
- Senses water temperature via internal thermostat
- Provides ECO safety (high-temp cutoff)
- Senses flammable vapors via FVIR sensor (FVIR-equipped models)
- Displays diagnostic flash codes via the LED
Why dealer-only
- Gas-line work requires licensed plumber
- Factory calibration for NG vs LP
- FVIR sensor requires proper installation to prevent false trips
- Warranty voided if non-licensed person performs gas work
Symptoms
- Code 7 flashes — gas valve internal fault
- Pilot lights but main burner won\'t fire
- Burner won\'t shut off (stuck-open solenoid — dangerous)
- LED doesn\'t illuminate at all
- Erratic flash codes that don\'t match the actual issue

NG to LP conversion
Requires State LP conversion kit + licensed installer to recalibrate. State factory-installed for one fuel; switching fuels mid-life is more expensive than at install.
Replace valve or replace unit?
On 8+ year-old units, gas valve replacement at $450-900 approaches 50% of new-unit cost. Most installers recommend replacement instead. Inside warranty — always replace the valve.
Bottom line
Gas valve is dealer-only. Don\'t operate the unit if you suspect a stuck-open solenoid (burner won\'t shut off).
