ZeroWater: The Only Pitcher Filter That Removes Virtually All Dissolved Solids

ZeroWater (Philadelphia) makes the only pitcher filter on the US market with a 5-stage ion-exchange + carbon filtration system that reduces water TDS (total dissolved solids) to 0 ppm -- certified to NSF 53 for lead and NSF 42 for chlorine. While Brita and PUR use activated carbon only (leaving minerals, nitrates, and most dissolved solids in the water), ZeroWater's 5-stage design includes a dual-bed ion exchange resin that removes virtually all ionic contaminants. Every ZeroWater pitcher ships with a free TDS meter, demonstrating the brand's confidence in its claimed 0 TDS output.

ZeroWater vs. Brita vs. RO: TDS Comparison

Filter TypeOutput TDS (from 300 TDS source)Lead RemovedNitrates RemovedCost/Gallon
No filter (tap)300 ppmNoNo$0.001
Brita Standard280--295 ppmNoNo$0.10

* ZeroWater cost per gallon varies dramatically by source TDS -- high-TDS water clogs ZeroWater resin far faster than low-TDS water.

The ZeroWater Filter Life Problem in Hard Water

ZeroWater's primary drawback: filter life is heavily dependent on source water TDS. In soft, low-TDS municipal water (100--150 TDS), a ZeroWater filter lasts 25--40 gallons. In hard water (300--500 TDS), the same filter lasts only 15--25 gallons -- sometimes less. Annual filter cost in hard water areas can reach $200--$400 vs. $30--$50 for Brita Standard filters in the same household. For hard water households, ZeroWater's per-gallon economics are substantially worse than even premium Brita or a household RO system.
