PFAS Contamination: When Clearly Filtered Is Worth the Premium

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a family of over 12,000 synthetic chemicals used in non-stick cookware, firefighting foam, and water-resistant fabrics. PFAS contamination in US municipal water supplies has been documented in hundreds of communities -- the EPA's 2023 PFAS rule set maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) for six PFAS compounds. Households in confirmed PFAS-contaminated areas (check the EPA PFAS water system interactive map at epa.gov) should use a PFAS-certified filter: Clearly Filtered, Aquasana OptimH2O, or an NSF 58-certified RO system. Standard Brita, PUR Standard, and ZeroWater do not have certified PFAS removal data.

Clearly Filtered 3-Stage Under-Sink Filter

Clearly Filtered also makes a 3-stage under-sink filter system ($200--$280) that provides whole-kitchen-tap coverage at NSF 42, 53, and 401 certification -- without the tankless or RO complexity of the Waterdrop or APEC systems. It connects to the existing cold faucet via a diverter valve (no new faucet hole required). Filter life: 2,000 gallons per filter set (approximately 2 years for a household of 4). Annual maintenance cost: $75--$110. It is the most practical Clearly Filtered option for households who want certified performance without installing a new dedicated faucet.
