Kinetico Drinking Water System Filter Replacement and Maintenance

Kinetico MACguard filter replacement uses a color-change indicator and quarter-turn tool-free change. The K5 membranes and AquaKinetic pre-filters follow a volume-based replacement schedule.

MACguard filter module replacement

Kinetico MACguard filter modules include a color indicator that changes from blue to white as the media depletes. Monitor the indicator color monthly. When the indicator shows white, the module is depleted -- replace within 30 days. Replacement procedure: quarter-turn counterclockwise to unlock the module from the housing, pull straight out, insert the new module and quarter-turn clockwise to lock. No tools, no water shutoff required. A brief dribble from the module port is normal during the swap. Run 2-3 glasses of water through the new module before drinking to flush the initial carbon fines.

MACguard module life varies by source water condition: Chloramine Module in high-chloramine water (above 2 PPM) lasts approximately 500 gallons; in low-chloramine water, 1,500 gallons. Scale Guard Module lasts approximately 1,000 gallons in 15 GPG hard water. Lead Module lasts approximately 750 gallons in high-lead water (above 50 PPB). Kinetico dealer service contracts include module replacement at scheduled intervals appropriate for your specific source water chemistry.

K5 RO membrane life and replacement

The Kinetico K5 dual-membrane system uses two RO membranes (Kinetico-specific membranes, not standard 75 GPD residential membranes). Membrane life: 2-5 years depending on source water TDS and the chloramine/chlorine pre-treatment effectiveness. The Kinetico dealer replaces membranes during the annual service call -- this is not a DIY procedure on the K5, as membrane removal requires the dealer tool set and factory leak test after replacement. If output water TDS rises above 10-15% of source water TDS, the membrane efficiency is declining and the dealer should be contacted for membrane evaluation.

Annual dealer service

Kinetico recommends annual dealer service for K5 and AquaKinetic systems. The annual service typically includes: pre-filter replacement, output TDS measurement and comparison to source, membrane efficiency evaluation, leak inspection at all fittings, tank pressure check (AquaKinetic A200), and a water test for any locally emerging contaminants. For households on Kinetico service contracts, the annual visit is included in the contract fee (typically $80-150 per year including all filter replacements).
