Monthly cleaning -- drip tray and tap area
Remove the drip tray weekly or when it accumulates visible water. Wash with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and allow to dry before reinstalling. Wipe the tap area and surrounding cooler body with a damp cloth -- mineral deposits from water splash can build up on the hot tap area in particular. In hard water areas, clean the tap tips with a toothbrush and diluted white vinegar to remove calcium buildup that can restrict flow.
Quarterly sanitization of internal reservoirs
Glacier Bay recommends sanitizing the internal water reservoirs quarterly to prevent bacteria and biofilm buildup. Procedure: (1) Remove the water bottle and drain both hot and cold reservoirs completely. (2) Mix a sanitizing solution: 1 gallon of water + 1 tablespoon of household bleach (unscented). (3) Pour 1 liter of the solution into the reservoir through the bottle port. (4) Allow to sit for 10 minutes. (5) Drain through both taps until bleach odor is detectable. (6) Flush with clean water: fill with 1 gallon of clean water, drain through both taps. Repeat flushing once more. (7) Reinstall a fresh bottle and test taste before use. If bleach taste persists, flush again. This quarterly procedure is standard for all bottled water coolers regardless of brand.
Compressor maintenance
The Glacier Bay cooler compressor requires no service in normal use. Annually, use compressed air or a soft brush to clean the condenser coils and compressor area at the cooler rear or base -- dust accumulation reduces cooling efficiency. Do not spray water or liquid near the compressor. If the unit stops cooling but the heater still works, the compressor may have failed -- Glacier Bay home coolers are not designed for field repair.
