Bosch refrigerator water dispenser -- UltraClarity Pro filter
Bosch refrigerators with water dispenser (French door, side-by-side, and 4-door models) use the UltraClarity Pro filter internally. The UltraClarity Pro is a 5-stage filter NSF certified under Standards 42 and 53: it reduces chlorine taste and odor (NSF 42), lead, mercury, benzene, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and asbestos (NSF 53). Bosch publishes the specific reduction percentages for each contaminant class in the UltraClarity Pro specification sheet. The filter is accessible from the upper right corner of the refrigerator interior and twists out without tools.
UltraClarity Pro filter life and replacement indicator
The UltraClarity Pro filter is rated for 6 months or approximately 80 gallons at the Bosch recommended 0.5 GPM dispense flow rate. Bosch refrigerators display a filter change reminder on the control panel at the 6-month mark or when flow rate decreases noticeably (indicating filter fouling). The filter replacement indicator is time-based, not volume-based -- households that use the water dispenser heavily (more than 1 gallon per day) should replace the filter at 3-4 months rather than waiting for the 6-month indicator. Replacement UltraClarity Pro filters (Bosch part 11034151) cost approximately $35-45 each at appliance retailers.
External filtration to protect Bosch refrigerator filtration
In areas with very hard water (above 15 GPG) or high sediment, adding a pre-filter on the refrigerator supply line reduces fouling of the UltraClarity Pro filter and extends its life. A simple inline 5-micron sediment filter (1/4-inch compression, approximately $15-25) installed on the refrigerator supply line removes particulates before the Bosch internal filter. In hard water areas, a whole-home water softener significantly extends the UltraClarity Pro filter life by reducing the mineral loading that depletes the ion exchange component of the filter.
