Pre-Soaking the Filter Before First Use
The Brita bottle filter contains granular activated carbon that needs to be saturated before first use. Remove the filter cartridge from the sealed packaging. Hold the filter under cold running water for 15 seconds, turning it so water penetrates the housing from all sides. Allow the filter to drip dry for 30 seconds. Insert the filter into the lid filter holder -- push firmly until it seats with a slight click or resistance stop. Fill the bottle with cold tap water to test the assembly before adding any ice or flavored water.
First Fill: Priming the Filter
Fill the bottle fully and drink or discard the first complete fill through the filter. This initial draw removes any residual carbon dust from the manufacturing process. The water may taste or smell slightly of activated carbon on the first fill -- this is normal and dissipates after the initial flush. From the second fill onward, filtered water should taste noticeably cleaner than tap water if your tap water contains any chlorine or taste compounds. If water flow through the filter is very slow (taking more than 30 seconds to drink a full glass), the filter may not be fully saturated -- hold the bottle horizontal and shake gently for 10 seconds to distribute water through the filter media.
Filter Replacement
After 40 gallons of use (approximately 2 months for a twice-daily 26-oz fill cycle), replace the filter. To remove the old filter: open the lid and grip the filter housing; twist counterclockwise (or press the release tab on newer models) and pull the cartridge out. Discard the old filter in household waste. Pre-soak the new filter for 15 seconds under cold running water. Insert the new filter into the lid housing and press until seated. Refill and use immediately -- no additional priming fill is required beyond the standard first-fill practice.
Keeping Track of Filter Life
Brita does not include a filter life indicator in its bottle products (unlike some pitcher lids). Set a calendar reminder for 2 months from the date you install a new filter, or mark the installation date on the bottle with a permanent marker on the base. Alternatively, fill a 1-liter bottle once daily and change the filter after 40 fills (40 liters = 10.6 gallons x 3.78 fills per gallon = approximately 40 fills). The simplest approach: change the filter at the same time every 2 months as a routine maintenance task regardless of perceived water quality.
