Vortens toilet installation overview

Vortens uses standard US 12-inch rough-in + universal aftermarket parts compatibility. Two-piece install procedures match Mansfield/Sterling/AmStd. Lugano (traditional one-piece) and Onika (skirted one-piece) require two-person install + specific considerations for skirted-trapway models.

Tools required

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Channel-lock pliers
  • Screwdriver (Phillips + flathead)
  • 4-foot level
  • Bucket + sponge
  • Hacksaw (for corroded tank-bowl bolts)

Materials required

  • Wax ring (Korky 6000 or Fluidmaster 7530, $5-$10) — NOT included with Vortens
  • Floor flange bolts ($3-$5 brass set)
  • 12" braided supply line ($5-$10)
  • Seat: Bemis 1500EC ($30-$35) or 1500RD ($28-$32) or Bemis 1200E compact for Cascade ($28-$32)
  • Setting compound ($6) for Onika on out-of-level floor

Standard Vortens two-piece install procedure

  1. Shut off water at under-toilet shutoff valve
  2. Flush old toilet to empty
  3. Disconnect supply line
  4. Remove tank-bowl bolts (Phillips from inside, wrench below)
  5. Lift tank off bowl
  6. Remove flange bolt caps + nuts
  7. Lift bowl off flange. Scrape old wax ring.
  8. Inspect flange. Replace if cracked.
  9. Install new wax ring on flange
  10. Set new Vortens bowl on flange. Press straight down. Verify plumb.
  11. Hand-tighten flange bolts only
  12. Install tank-bowl gasket on flush valve outlet (universal Bemis 7530 pattern)
  13. Set tank on bowl, align bolt holes
  14. Cross-tighten tank-bowl bolts 1/4 turn alternately until snug. Stop at snug + 1/4 turn.
  15. Connect supply line. Restore water.
  16. Test 3-5 flushes. Check for leaks.
  17. Install seat (sold separately)

Lugano one-piece — additional considerations

  1. Two-person lift required (~90 lbs single unit)
  2. NEVER twist during placement
  3. Floor should be flat — use setting compound around perimeter if not
  4. Wax ring with horn recommended
  5. Limited tank service access after install — verify fill valve and flapper before final mount

Onika skirted one-piece — critical considerations

  1. Floor flange MUST be at or below floor level. Skirted base will not seat over protruding flange. Solutions: grind flange OR use recessed flange.
  2. Floor must be flat. Out-of-level floor creates visible gaps at skirted base.
  3. Two-person lift required (~95 lbs)
  4. Skirted-trapway service access limited — wax ring failure requires complete one-piece removal
  5. Caulk between skirted base and floor recommended for clean visual transition

Cancun dual-flush — installation note

Same as standard Vortens two-piece, plus:

  • Verify tank-top clearance for top-mount dual-flush button
  • Cartridge orientation: align with button rod per install manual
  • Keep WaterSense Most Efficient certificate for utility rebate paperwork

Common Vortens install mistakes

  • Wax ring not purchased: Vortens ships without wax ring. Korky 6000 ($5-$10).
  • Tank-bowl bolts overtightened: cracks porcelain. Snug + 1/4 turn limit.
  • Floor flange bolts overtightened: cracks bowl porcelain at base.
  • Onika on out-of-level floor: cracks at unsupported edge.
  • Onika flange not below floor level: skirted base won't seat.
  • Old supply line reused: replace at install ($5-$10).
  • Cascade generic elongated seat: 18" compact bowl needs Bemis 1200E.
  • Cancun tank-top clearance ignored: top-mount button needs vertical space.
