Niagara toilets have one repair issue you won't see on any other brand: vacuum-assist trapway failure on the Stealth and Stealth Sabre models. The vacuum mechanism is what makes the 0.8 GPF flush work — when it stops functioning, the toilet flushes weakly or not at all. Other Niagaras (Liberty, Phantom, Steaful) use standard gravity flush mechanisms with universal repair paths. Here's how to diagnose and fix each common symptom.
Symptom 1: Niagara Stealth not flushing properly
The most-searched Niagara repair query ($3.96 CPC). The Stealth's 0.8 GPF flush depends on the vacuum-assist trapway pulling waste through. When the vacuum mechanism fails, the flush drops to the volume of water alone (no acceleration), which often isn't enough to clear waste.
Diagnostic steps
- Lift the tank lid and watch the flush. When you press the handle, do you see the flapper lift cleanly and water rush out? If yes, the flush valve side is working — the issue is in the vacuum-assist or below.
- Listen during flush. A working Stealth makes a distinctive "whoosh-suck" sound as the vacuum activates. If you hear only water flowing without the suction sound, the vacuum dome assembly has failed.
- Inspect the vacuum-assist dome. It's the sealed plastic dome above the flush valve. Look for cracks or visible damage. Check that the small vent hole on top is clear of mineral buildup.
Fix
If the vacuum dome is damaged or the vent is clogged:
- Clean the vent. Small mineral deposits can block the vent. Use a paperclip wire to gently clear it. If buildup is heavy, soak the entire dome assembly in white vinegar for 2 hours.
- Replace the dome assembly. Niagara part 77000WHA-S, ~$45. Order direct from Niagara Customer Service (1-800-831-8383). Replacement procedure: shut off water, drain tank, unbolt the dome from the flush valve, install new, retest.
- If the issue persists after dome replacement — check the flapper. The Stealth-specific flapper (77000WHA-F) is required; universal flappers won't maintain vacuum.
Symptom 2: Niagara toilet keeps running
Standard flapper-leak issue, same as any other brand. Differences for Niagara:
- On a Stealth: the flapper is the Niagara-specific 77000WHA-F. Universal flappers won't work because they don't seal against the vacuum-assist dome correctly. Order direct from Niagara (~$15).
- On a Liberty, Phantom, or Steaful: standard flapper issue. Korky 100 (2") or Korky 2032BP (3") universal flappers fit. $5–$10 part, 10-minute DIY.
The food-coloring confirmation test
Add 6–8 drops of food coloring to the tank, don't flush for 30 minutes. If colored water appears in the bowl, the flapper (or canister, on AquaPiston Niagaras — rare) is leaking.
Symptom 3: Niagara toilet won't flush at all (handle just clicks)
Two possible causes:
- Chain disconnected from trip lever. Lift the tank lid. Verify the chain is connected from the handle arm to the flapper. If broken, replace handle assembly ($12 universal).
- Trip lever broken inside the tank. The metal arm extending from the handle into the tank may have snapped. Replace the trip lever (Niagara 77000WHA-T or universal Danco 89280).
Symptom 4: Slow fill or whistling fill
Fill-valve issue. Niagara uses standard Fluidmaster-pattern fill valves on all current models:

Symptom 5: Stealth flushes but doesn't refill
This is a Stealth-specific symptom — the vacuum-assist mechanism is operating but the tank refill is interrupted. Causes:
- Fill valve has failed (replace per above)
- Refill tube has come off the overflow tube (reattach — push it back onto the small nipple)
- Float on fill valve set too low (adjust upward via the screw on top of Fluidmaster 400A)
Symptom 6: Water on floor behind the toilet

Symptom 7: Stealth is loud during flush
The Stealth's vacuum-assist is noticeably louder than gravity-flush toilets — it's a normal characteristic, not a malfunction. The "whoosh-suck" sound is the vacuum activating. If the noise has become noticeably louder than when the toilet was new, check the vent hole on the dome assembly for blockage.
When to call a plumber for Niagara repair
- Vacuum-assist dome replacement on Stealth — $180–$280 service call. Worth it if you're not comfortable draining the tank and the dome is the issue.
- Persistent flush failure after dome replacement — may be a trapway blockage or sewer-line issue that requires diagnosis.
- Continuous running that survives flapper replacement — may be flush valve seat damage or canister failure on dual-flush variants.
