Replacement procedure (25-30 minutes)
- Shut off water at under-toilet shutoff valve.
- Flush toilet to empty tank.
- Disconnect supply line from bottom of tank using channel-lock pliers.
- Sponge out remaining water.
- From inside the tank, unscrew the fill valve's lock nut from underneath (channel locks or adjustable wrench).
- Lift old fill valve straight up out of the tank.
- Inspect shank hole, clean any residue.
- Install Fluidmaster 400A: insert through shank hole, hand-tighten lock nut from below.
- Adjust valve height: top sits 1" above tank water line.
- Connect supply line. Hand-tighten + 1/4 turn.
- Position refill tube terminating inside overflow tube.
- Turn shutoff valve on. Tank fills.
- Adjust float cup slider for correct water level.
- Test flush 3-5 times. Verify quiet refill and correct shutoff.
Common Mansfield fill valve service mistakes
- Lock nut overtightened: Cracks tank porcelain. Hand-tight + 1/4 turn limit.
