Mansfield Plumbing Toilets: full buyer's guide
Mansfield Plumbing Products (Perrysville, Ohio, founded 1929) is one of the last large-scale toilet manufacturers still casting vitreous china in the United States. The brand doesn't compete on design or on retail mindshare — it competes on availability, parts standardization, and the trust of US plumbers who buy at the supply-house counter rather than at Home Depot. If a working plumber in Ohio, Pennsylvania, or West Virginia is doing a like-for-like toilet swap, Mansfield is probably in their truck.
The Mansfield positioning
Mansfield doesn't sell to consumers through marketing. The brand's distribution is roughly 70% plumber-trade through Ferguson, Home Depot Pro Desk, Hajoca, and regional supply houses; 25% builder-spec for tract-home construction; 5% direct-to-consumer through Home Depot retail and Amazon. The product engineering reflects this — robust ceramics, repair-grade flush mechanisms compatible with standard Fluidmaster and Korky aftermarket parts, no electronic gimmickry, no proprietary cartridges. A Mansfield toilet bought today will still be servicing-friendly in 2046.
The Mansfield product line, decoded
- Alto ($170–$210) — Mansfield's volume mid-tier two-piece. 1.28 GPF, comfort height available, elongated and round versions. Model #160/161 (two-piece, round, 12" rough-in) is the most-stocked Mansfield SKU in the US.
- Brentwood ($240) — slightly upgraded Alto with a smoother bowl glaze and the Mansfield "PowerFlush" 3" flush valve. The Brentwood is the next step up when the plumber wants performance margin over the basic Alto.
- Cascade ($280–$330) — one-piece elongated. Comfort height, 1.28 GPF, FlushTech mechanism. Mansfield's one-piece flagship for the residential remodel market.
- Pro-Fit 1 / Pro-Fit 3 ($150–$220) — the rebuild-grade entry tier. Pro-Fit 1 is round-front, 1.6 GPF, comfort-height optional. Pro-Fit 3 adds elongated bowl + 1.28 GPF. The landlord-default Mansfield.
- Plumber's Choice ($130) — the absolute entry tier. Round, 1.6 GPF, standard height. Sold exclusively through plumbing supply houses for emergency replacements where matching the existing rough-in matters more than spec.
- Quantum ($420) — Mansfield's pressure-assist model. Flushmate Series 503 internals (the same as American Standard Champion Pressure-Assisted), Mansfield-cast porcelain.
- SmartHeight / EnviroGreen — the comfort-height + 1.28 GPF SKUs of Alto, Brentwood, and Cascade. WaterSense certified, rebate-eligible in most utility programs.
- Wall-hung / Wall-mounted commercial ($380–$520) — Mansfield's commercial line for tenant office buildings and light commercial.
Why plumbers like Mansfield
- US-cast porcelain. Domestic manufacturing means 3–5 day stock turnover at supply houses, not 4–6 week import lead times.
- Parts universality. Mansfield uses Fluidmaster 400A fill valves, standard 2" or 3" flush valves, and Korky/Universal-pattern flappers. Anything that breaks can be replaced from the parts wall at any plumbing-supply or hardware store.
- Bolt-pattern compatibility. Mansfield rough-in dimensions match the legacy American Standard / Kohler patterns exactly. Like-for-like swaps drop into existing flange bolts in 95% of US homes.
- No-bullshit engineering. No tankless variants, no app integration, no proprietary flush cartridges. The Alto in 2026 is essentially the same toilet as the Alto in 2014, with minor flush-volume revisions for the 1.28 GPF EPA standard.
Where Mansfield loses to TOTO and Kohler
- Flush performance ceiling. A Mansfield Brentwood at 1.28 GPF tests at ~600–700 grams MaP. A TOTO Drake II tests at 1,000+. The bowl-cleansing isn't as effective in the same flush volume.
- Glaze technology. Mansfield doesn't have a hydrophobic ceramic glaze equivalent to TOTO CeFiONtect or Kohler Pure-Clean. Standard ceramic glaze accumulates mineral spots faster.
- Design. Mansfield is workhorse styling — no designer one-pieces, no wall-hung designer options, no Veil/Numi/Neorest competition.
- Color range. White and biscuit, that's it. Special-order colors discontinued in 2018.
Where Mansfield wins
- Landlord rebuilds and rental properties — robust, repairable, low cost, plumbers know them
- New construction tract homes — builder-spec discount pricing, in-stock at supply houses
- Pre-1995 rough-in homes (10" or 14") — Mansfield's Pro-Fit line includes 10" and 14" rough-in SKUs that other brands special-order
- Emergency replacements — when an existing toilet cracks and needs a same-day swap, Mansfield is on the supply-house shelf where TOTO often isn't
Warranty
5 years on tank components, lifetime on porcelain for residential. The Quantum pressure-assist carries the Flushmate 5-year mechanical warranty in addition.
