Is your water chlorinated or chloraminated?
This is the most important question for filtered showerhead selection. Download your municipality's Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) from their website or at waterqualitydata.us. Search for "Total Chlorine" and "Free Chlorine" entries. If total chlorine and free chlorine values are equal (or nearly so), your system uses free chlorine. If total chlorine significantly exceeds free chlorine, the difference is chloramines. Alternatively, call your water utility and ask directly: "Do you use chloramine or free chlorine for disinfection?" Large US cities using chloramines include Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, Portland, and Houston -- but treatment varies by utility and year. Check your specific provider.
Vitamin C dosing and filter life
The Waterdrop WD-SHF-06A Vitamin C stage contains a defined quantity of ascorbic acid that depletes at a rate proportional to the chlorine/chloramine concentration in the water and the flow rate. Waterdrop rates the filter at 30,000 gallons -- approximately 18-24 months at a 45-gallon-per-day household shower use rate. Higher chlorine/chloramine levels deplete the Vitamin C faster. If your water has unusually high chlorine (above 3 ppm free chlorine, which is at the top of the EPA acceptable range), expect 15-18 months instead of 18-24 months. NSF 177 -- what the certification covers
NSF Standard 177 (Shower Filtration Systems) requires that showerhead filters reduce free chlorine by at least 50% under standard testing conditions (2 ppm inlet chlorine at 2.5 GPM). It does not test chloramine removal -- there is no NSF standard for showerhead chloramine reduction as of this writing. Waterdrop's chloramine removal claims for the WD-SHF-06A are based on independent laboratory testing, not NSF certification. Both Aquasana AQ-4100NSF and Waterdrop WD-SHF-06A carry NSF 177 for chlorine; neither carries a certified chloramine removal rating. For chloramine-heavy water, use chemistry knowledge (Vitamin C chemistry is well-established) rather than certification as the selection guide.
Spray performance -- filtering does not reduce flow
A common concern about filtered showerheads is whether the filter media reduces water pressure. At a new filter, there is no measurable pressure drop in Waterdrop's design -- the filter housing is designed with sufficient media bed cross-section to maintain full 2.5 GPM at standard supply pressure. As the filter approaches its rated life (especially the KDF media stage), minimal flow resistance can accumulate. If flow decreases noticeably before the rated filter life, the media may be exhausted faster than the rating in your specific water chemistry -- replace the cartridge.
