NSF 177 -- what it requires from Aquasana

NSF Standard 177 certification requires the manufacturer to submit the filtration product for testing at an NSF-accredited laboratory. The test runs water with a defined 2 ppm free chlorine concentration through the filter at 2.5 GPM and measures chlorine concentration in the effluent at multiple points through the filter life. For certification, the product must maintain at least 50% chlorine reduction throughout its rated life. Aquasana AQ-4100NSF achieves 97% reduction in early-life testing and maintains NSF-required performance through 10,000 gallons. Most competing filtered showerheads -- including Culligan ISH-200 and many Amazon-brand products -- do not carry NSF 177 certification. Their reduction claims are not independently verified.

Two-stage filtration -- why it outperforms single-stage

Single-stage KDF-55 showerhead filters remove chlorine through a redox reaction but have minimal effect on organic compounds (pesticide residues, VOCs, pharmaceutical traces) that may be present in municipal water.
