Installation location requirements
Install the Waterdrop WH-CM conditioner on the main water supply line after the pressure regulator (if present) and after any iron or sediment pre-filtration. The ideal location is where the main line enters the home, before it branches to water heaters, irrigation systems, and individual fixtures. The system requires 12 inches of clearance above the tank for the control head and a stable, level surface. The tank can be oriented vertically only -- horizontal installation is not supported. Operating temperature must remain above 36 degrees F; outdoor installation in cold climates requires insulation.
Pre-filter requirement
Waterdrop recommends installing a 5-micron sediment pre-filter cartridge housing upstream of the conditioner tank. Sediment above 5 microns can coat TAC media beads and reduce conditioning effectiveness over time. Pre-filter cartridges (standard 4.5 x 10 inch big-blue format, widely available for $5-10 each) require replacement every 3-6 months depending on sediment load. Monitoring pre-filter condition is the primary maintenance task for the Waterdrop system.
Plumbing connection steps
Turn off the main water supply valve. Cut the main supply line at the selected installation point. Install the inlet shut-off valve (1-inch ball valve) on the supply side. Connect the inlet port of the Waterdrop tank using 1-inch NPT fittings with thread sealant tape. Connect the outlet port to the downstream plumbing with a second shut-off valve on the outlet side. Installing bypass valves (or a 3-valve bypass assembly) allows future maintenance without interrupting whole-house water supply. Open the inlet valve slowly to fill the tank and purge air. Check all connections for leaks. Open the outlet valve and restore service to the home.
Commissioning and initial flush
Open all cold water taps in the home for 3-5 minutes to purge carbon fines from the catalytic carbon media. The initial flush may produce gray-tinted water -- this is normal and harmless. Continue flushing until water runs clear. The system is fully operational immediately after flushing with no programming, salt loading, or regeneration cycle needed. Check all connections after 24 hours at full operating pressure.
