Navien Heat Exchanger Descaling Kit and Schedule
Navien sells a factory descaling kit (Navien Descaling Kit, available through authorized dealers) for the NPE and NCB series. The descaling procedure circulates a dilute citric acid solution through the heat exchanger using the internal circulator pump on the NCB or an external pump on the NPE. In soft water homes (0--3 GPG post-treatment), descaling every 2--3 years is adequate. In moderately hard water homes (3--7 GPG post-treatment -- common if a salt-free conditioner rather than softener is used), annual descaling is recommended. Navien authorized dealer service calls for descaling: $150--$300 depending on market. DIY descaling using Navien's documented procedure is supported for the NPE series; the NCB requires dealer service for descaling.
Navien Flow Sensor Maintenance
The Navien NPE and NCB series include an inlet flow sensor that activates the burner when flow exceeds 0.5 GPM. In hard water areas without treatment, mineral deposits accumulate on the flow sensor paddle and reduce sensor sensitivity -- eventually causing error code E003 (flow sensor fault). Annual inspection and cleaning of the flow sensor paddle (accessible through the inlet filter port) is recommended in water above 10 GPG. In soft water homes, flow sensor cleaning every 3--5 years is typically sufficient.
