How to Install a Water Softener Upstream of Moen Fixtures

A whole-home water softener installs at the main water supply line entry point, before any distribution to fixtures. This placement ensures every Moen faucet, shower, and appliance receives softened water.

Optimal softener placement for Moen fixture protection

Install the softener at the main cold water supply line immediately after the main shutoff valve and before the line splits to the water heater. This single-point installation softens all supply water -- both cold and hot -- to every fixture in the home. Do not install the softener only on the hot water line; many Moen faucets mix hot and cold, and hard cold water will cause spotting even with softened hot water.

Bypass valve installation

All residential softeners include a 3-valve bypass: two isolation valves (inlet and outlet) and a bypass valve between them. The bypass allows water to flow around the softener during maintenance, salt addition, or malfunction without shutting off the household supply. Install the bypass in an accessible location -- within arm reach of the brine tank for solo maintenance. Moen recommends maintaining bypass valve access for service technicians who may need to isolate the softener when servicing Moen fixtures downstream.

Drain line and air gap

The softener drain line carries brine and waste water during regeneration to a floor drain, utility sink, or standpipe. Install an air gap between the drain line end and the drain outlet -- a 1.5-inch physical gap that prevents siphoning of drain water back into the softener during a pressure loss event. Most local plumbing codes require an air gap; check local code before finalizing the drain connection.

First-fill and calibration

After installation: (1) Set the control valve to the bypass position. (2) Slowly open the inlet valve to fill the resin tank -- air purge will take 5-10 minutes as air bleeds from the resin tank through the outlet. (3) Add 40 lbs of high-purity water softener salt pellets to the brine tank. (4) Set the control valve to service position. (5) Program the control valve: set current time, hardness value (from water test), and regeneration day/time. (6) Manually initiate one regeneration cycle to charge the resin before first service. (7) After 24 hours, test the outlet water hardness with a test strip to verify 0-3 GPG output.
