Step 1: Test your water hardness
Water hardness is measured in grains per gallon (GPG) or milligrams per liter (mg/L). The conversion: 1 GPG = 17.1 mg/L. Test your water with: (1) a free mail-in test from your water utility (most U.S. utilities publish annual water quality reports with hardness data), (2) a $10-15 water hardness test strip kit available at hardware stores, or (3) a Taylor K-1766 hardness test kit for accurate measurement in well water. Classify: 0-3 GPG = soft, 3-7 GPG = moderately hard, 7-10 GPG = hard, 10-14 GPG = very hard, above 14 GPG = extremely hard.
Step 2: Calculate daily grain removal requirement
Formula: (persons in household x 75 gallons per person per day) x hardness in GPG = daily grains. Example: 3 people x 75 GPD x 12 GPG = 2,700 grains per day. For a 7-day regeneration cycle (common setting): 2,700 x 7 = 18,900 grains. A 24,000-grain softener is the minimum for this household; a 32,000-grain unit provides comfortable reserve. Never size a softener to 100% capacity -- reserve capacity prevents hardness breakthrough.
Step 3: Check iron content
Iron above 0.3 PPM in source water fouls softener resin faster and can stain Moen stainless and chrome finishes orange-brown. Test iron with a water test kit (iron test strips or laboratory water test). For iron 0.3-1.0 PPM: use an iron-reducing salt additive (Morton Iron Out pellets) and regenerate on a tighter cycle. For iron above 1.0 PPM: install a dedicated iron filter (KDF-55 or birm media) before the softener inlet. Do not attempt to use the softener as a primary iron removal device above 1 PPM -- resin fouling is rapid and not reversible without professional resin cleaning.
Step 4: Choose demand-initiated over timer-based regeneration
Demand-initiated regeneration (DIR) units count water usage and regenerate based on actual consumption rather than on a set time schedule. Moen fixtures benefit from DIR units because: (1) DIR units never deliver a hardness breakthrough slug from premature regeneration on a timer, (2) DIR units conserve salt and water (no unnecessary regeneration cycles), and (3) DIR units adapt to seasonal usage changes (vacation weeks, high-usage summer months) automatically.
