Softening salt for iSpring WCS50KG
Morton Clean and Protect (40 lbs, $7-10) and Diamond Crystal Bright and Soft (40 lbs, $6-9) are the most widely available compatible salts for the iSpring WCS50KG. Add salt when the brine tank level drops below one-third full. Never allow the brine tank to run completely dry -- operating the softener through a dry brine tank cycle will not regenerate the resin and may cause air to enter the brine draw system, requiring manual repriming. Do not overfill the brine tank above the maximum fill line; excessive salt can form a bridge above a water layer, preventing brine formation. At standard programming (48,000-grain capacity, 7-lb salt per cycle), monthly salt consumption at 10-day regeneration intervals is approximately 21 lbs per month.
Cation exchange resin replacement
iSpring uses standard 8% crosslink fine mesh or standard mesh cation exchange resin in the WCS50KG. After 10-15 years of service, or earlier if iron fouling or chlorine degradation has reduced capacity, resin replacement restores the softener to factory specification. A 1.5 cubic foot bag of replacement resin costs $60-100 from water treatment suppliers. Resin replacement requires draining the mineral tank, removing the control valve and distributor tube, pouring out spent resin, cleaning the tank, and adding fresh resin. The replacement procedure is documented in the iSpring service manual; the procedure takes 2-3 hours including tank reinstallation and control valve reconnection.
Control valve seals and injector kit
The iSpring WCS50KG control valve uses Fleck-compatible internal components. The seals and spacers kit (Fleck part 60120-10 or equivalent iSpring service kit) replaces the piston assembly wear items: O-rings, seals, and spacers. Replace this kit if the control valve is leaking at the piston assembly or if the softener is not drawing brine correctly despite a functional injector. The injector assembly (marked with a letter A-D based on size) controls brine draw flow rate. Replace the injector if salt remains undissolved in the brine tank after a completed regeneration cycle. Injector kits cost $10-20 and are available from iSpring directly and from water treatment parts suppliers.
