Well water considerations for iSpring softeners
Private well water frequently contains iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide in addition to hardness. iSpring softeners handle up to 3 PPM clear water (dissolved) iron within the softener resin. Above 3 PPM iron, install an iSpring WGB22BM iron and manganese pre-filter upstream of the softener to remove iron before it reaches the resin bed. Iron fouling of cation exchange resin is cumulative and not reversible by standard salt regeneration -- pre-treatment protects the resin investment. For hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor), an iSpring WGB32B catalytic carbon whole-house filter upstream of the softener neutralizes sulfide before it can off-gas in household plumbing.
Salt selection for iSpring softeners
iSpring recommends high-purity evaporated salt pellets (99.5%+ NaCl) for the WCS50KG brine tank. Compatible products include Morton Clean and Protect, Diamond Crystal Bright and Soft, and similar sodium chloride pellet salt products. Avoid potassium chloride (KCl) as a substitute without verifying compatibility with the iSpring control valve settings -- some control valves require adjustment of salt dose when switching from NaCl to KCl, as potassium chloride has different regeneration kinetics than sodium chloride. Potassium chloride salt is appropriate for households that prefer not to add sodium to softened water and is available at $20-30 per 40-pound bag vs. $7-12 for sodium chloride.
Understanding iSpring demand-initiated regeneration
The iSpring WCS50KG control valve monitors cumulative water volume consumed and initiates regeneration automatically when programmed capacity is reached, rather than regenerating on a fixed time schedule. DIR (demand-initiated regeneration) avoids the wasted salt of over-regenerating a partially exhausted resin bed and avoids the hardness breakthrough of under-regenerating an exhausted bed. The control valve display shows remaining capacity in gallons or grains at any time. Setting the programmed capacity at 90% of rated capacity (43,000 grains for the 48,000-grain model) provides a safety margin against breakthrough before the overnight regeneration cycle starts.
