How to Set Up an Avalon Water Dispenser and Replace the Delivery Pump

First-time Avalon setup takes 20 minutes; pump replacement takes 40 minutes with a Phillips screwdriver. This guide covers both procedures with the specific steps that prevent the most common setup and repair mistakes.

Unpacking and Location Selection

Place the Avalon dispenser on a flat, level surface with at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides for ventilation. The compressor on the back panel exhausts heat; blocking the exhaust vents reduces cooling efficiency and can overheat the compressor over time. Plug into a standard 110V, 15-amp outlet -- the dispenser draws a peak of 120 to 150 watts during compressor start and 75 watts running average. Do not use an extension cord; the compressor starting surge can cause nuisance tripping on extension cord circuit breakers.

Initial Sanitization Before First Use

Mix 1 teaspoon of household bleach in 1 gallon of fresh water. Pour directly into the cold reservoir via the top panel access (open the top panel and pour the sanitizing solution into the cold tank inlet). On A5 models, you can also run this solution through the probe by inserting the probe into a small container of the solution. Allow the solution to sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Run the cold faucet until solution flows through, then run 2 gallons of fresh water through both faucets to fully flush. The dispenser is now ready for the first water bottle.

Bottle Loading Procedure

Open the bottom access door. Tilt the 5-gallon jug horizontally and slide it into the cabinet opening, water cap first. Push the bottle until it contacts the rear stop. Lower the probe into the bottle cap opening until it seats and the cap seals around the probe tube. On self-sealing cap designs, you will feel the probe pierce the foil seal and lock with a slight resistance. Close the access door. The pump activates within 30 seconds and begins filling the cold reservoir.

Delivery Pump Replacement

Unplug the dispenser. Remove the rear access panel (3 Phillips screws). Locate the pump at the lower left of the interior (typical on Avalon models -- verify against your unit). Photograph all tubing connections. Disconnect the silicone tubing by pressing the push-fit release collets. Unplug the 2-pin motor power connector. Remove the 3 pump mounting screws and lift out the old pump. Install the new pump with inlet to the probe line and outlet to the reservoir line. Reconnect all tubing and the power connector. Reinstall the access panel, restore power, load a jug, and confirm fill cycle completes within 90 seconds.
