Rinnai Sensei — The Condensing Tankless Line

The Sensei (RU) series is Rinnai's flagship condensing tankless line. Models, sizing, and how it differs from Sensei RX and legacy RUC.

Updated May 2026 · Rinnai Water Heaters

The Sensei (RU) series is Rinnai's flagship condensing tankless water heater line. Introduced in 2016 as the replacement for the RUC condensing series, Sensei is the volume product across Rinnai's North American business — and the unit most plumbers default to when a homeowner says "I want a Rinnai."

What makes Sensei different

  • Condensing efficiency — 0.96 UEF / 96% thermal efficiency. Secondary condensing heat exchanger captures heat that would otherwise exit the flue
  • PVC venting — 2" or 3" Schedule 40 PVC instead of expensive stainless Category III. Easier and cheaper to install
  • 15-year heat exchanger warranty — the longest in residential tankless
  • ControlR Wi-Fi built-in on every model
  • Compact footprint — under 27" tall, 4.5" deep cabinet
  • Smart Sense control — adaptive burner modulation based on demand prediction

Sensei vs Sensei RX

Same chassis. The Sensei RX adds a built-in recirculation pump and dedicated return-line port. If you want hot-water recirculation, RX is purpose-built. If you don't, plain Sensei costs $300-500 less. See recirculation hub for the decision logic.

Sensei vs Sensei+ (RUR)

The RUR199iN and RUR98iN are the recirculation-equipped variants. RUR has the pump but the chassis is otherwise identical to standard Sensei (no separate "RX" model lineage). Confusingly, both Sensei+ (RUR) and Sensei RX have built-in pumps — RX is the newer architecture (better firmware, dedicated return port), RUR is the legacy approach.

Pricing

  • RU98iN: $1,400-1,650
  • RU130iN: $1,500-1,750
  • RU150iN: $1,650-1,950
  • RU160iN: $1,750-2,050
  • RU180iN: $1,850-2,200
  • RU199iN: $1,950-2,300

Installation typically adds $1,800-3,500 depending on gas line upgrade, venting changes, and condensate plumbing.

Bottom line

If you want a Rinnai and don't need recirculation, buy a Sensei in the size that matches your bathroom count plus your incoming water temperature. RU199iN is the no-regrets pick for 3+ bathroom homes. See our full Rinnai lineup.
