Navien Recirculation Pump (Internal) — NPE-A2 Pump Replacement

The internal recirculation pump inside the NPE-A2 handles built-in recirc. When it fails, replacement is straightforward but dealer-installed.

Updated May 2026 · Navien Water Heaters

The NPE-A2 includes an internal recirculation pump in the cabinet. The pump pushes water through the dedicated return line (or crossover valve) to maintain hot water at distant fixtures. When the pump fails, recirculation stops; the rest of the unit continues to function normally.

Symptoms of pump failure

  • Recirculation no longer working — distant fixtures suddenly take longer for hot water
  • Audible knock or hum from the cabinet during operation
  • Bearing noise (whine, grinding)
  • Pump seizes — no movement at all
  • HotButton press doesn't trigger any pump activity

Replacement

The pump is a sealed assembly (motor + impeller + housing) replaced as a unit. Generally an NSS-level repair — requires opening the cabinet, disconnecting hydraulic plumbing, and replacing the pump assembly with new gaskets.

Cost

  • Pump assembly: $250-450 OEM
  • Labor: $200-400
  • Total: $450-850

Warranty

Covered under 5-year NPE parts warranty. Labor in year 1 only.

When external pump might make more sense

If your NPE-A2 is 8+ years old and the internal pump fails:

  • Replace internal pump: $450-850; warranty-compliant; clean install
  • Install external Grundfos: $200-400; bypass the internal pump; still get recirculation

External pump is significantly cheaper but adds plumbing to the install. Decision depends on whether you value the clean cabinet appearance and integrated control vs the cost savings.

Prevention

The internal pump is designed for 10-12 year service life. Factors that extend or shorten:

  • Always-on recirc schedules — running 24/7 wears the pump faster. Use schedule mode or HotButton
  • Hard water scale in the recirc loop wears the impeller. Soft water and annual descaling extend pump life
  • Air in the loop — bubble cavitation damages impellers. Verify check valves and air-purge the loop

Bottom line

Internal pump failure on an 8+ year NPE-A2 → discuss external pump option with the NSS. Inside warranty → always replace internal.
