Navien Navilink Water Heater — Specs, Features & Reviews

How to pair and use the NaviLink app — temperature control, recirculation, error code alerts, HomeKit and Google Home integration.

Updated May 2026 · Navien Water Heaters

NaviLink is Navien's Wi-Fi remote control app. Every current Navien NPE-A2, NPE-S2, NCB, NFC, and NHB ships with the NaviLink Wi-Fi module standard. The app handles temperature setting, recirculation scheduling, error code alerts, and operating history.

Setup

  1. Download NaviLink (iOS App Store / Google Play)
  2. Create a Navien account
  3. On the controller, navigate to Settings → Wi-Fi → Pair Mode
  4. In the app, tap Add Unit; the module broadcasts a temporary SSID
  5. Connect your phone to that SSID; enter home 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi credentials
  6. Wait 60 seconds for the unit to join your network and register with Navien servers

Critical: NaviLink only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Disable 5 GHz on combined SSIDs during pairing if needed.

Features

  • Temperature control — set output temp from 98°F to 140°F (residential cap) remotely
  • Recirculation scheduling — for NPE-A2 with built-in pump. Time windows or HotButton on-demand
  • Error code alerts — push notifications when the unit throws a code
  • Operating history — gas usage, runtime, peak demand graphs
  • Vacation mode — lowers temp and pauses recirc during away periods
  • Multi-unit cascade — for commercial multi-unit installs
  • Firmware updates — pushed via app to control board and Wi-Fi module

Smart home integrations

  • Apple HomeKit (since 2023)
  • Google Home (since 2023)
  • Amazon Alexa — temperature query and basic control

NaviLink quality — first-gen vs current

NaviLink on first-generation NPE-A had a rougher reputation — frequent drops, slow status updates, occasional crashes. The current NaviLink generation (NPE-A2 era) has been significantly improved. App store ratings have moved from 3-star territory to 4+. Still slightly behind Rinnai ControlR in polish, but functionally comparable.

Common Wi-Fi connection issues

  • Module won't connect: 2.4 vs 5 GHz mismatch (most common). Or router MAC filtering
  • "Disconnected" status: Wi-Fi signal too weak — mesh node or extender
  • App shows wrong status: reboot the Wi-Fi module from the controller (Settings → Wi-Fi → Restart)
  • Repeated drops: router DHCP exhaustion — assign static IP to the Navien's MAC address
  • App login issues: account verification email occasionally goes to spam

Models with NaviLink built-in

  • All NPE-A2 / S2 (current generation)
  • All NCB / NCB-E (current generation)
  • NFC fire-tube combi
  • NHB-55, NHB-80, NHB-110, NHB-150 (current production)

Legacy NPE-A / NPE-S — module is optional via aftermarket kit (Navien part number).

Bottom line

NaviLink does what you need it to do. For temperature monitoring, recirculation scheduling, and error-code alerts, it works well. It's not as polished as Rinnai ControlR but the gap is smaller than two years ago.
