The NPE series is Navien's pure-tankless water heater line — no space heating, just DHW. Two trims share the same chassis: NPE-A2 Premium (with built-in recirculation pump and 0.5-gallon buffer tank) and NPE-S2 Standard (without either).
NPE-A2 Premium models
| Model | BTU | GPM (35°F rise) | Pump | Buffer tank |

| NPE-210A2 | 199,000 | 9.6 | Built-in | 0.5 gal |

The A2 vs S2 decision
Same heat exchanger, same warranty, same NaviLink Wi-Fi. The differences are:
- NPE-A2 Premium includes built-in pump (for recirculation) and the 0.5-gallon buffer tank (eliminates cold-sandwich). $400-600 more than equivalent S2
- NPE-S2 Standard excludes both. Less expensive upfront, but if you have or plan to install a recirculation loop, you'll spend the savings on an external pump anyway
For 3+ bathroom homes or any home with recirculation, NPE-A2 is the no-regrets call. For small condos or single-bathroom installs in warm climates, NPE-S2 saves real money.
The buffer tank advantage
The NPE-A2's buffer tank is the feature that sets Navien apart from other tankless brands. It eliminates cold-sandwich (brief cold gaps mid-draw). Pure tankless brands can't replicate this with software. See our buffer tank explainer for the full breakdown.
Sizing
Use the GPM at 35°F rise (warm climate) or 70°F rise (cold climate) tables in the installation manual. Rough rules:
- 1 bathroom warm climate: NPE-150S2 fine
- 2 bathroom warm: NPE-180A2 or NPE-180S2
- 2-3 bathroom moderate: NPE-210A2 or NPE-240S2
- 3+ bathroom cold: NPE-240A2
Warranty
15 years heat exchanger / 5 years parts / 1 year labor — residential. Among the best in the category. See warranty hub.
Pricing
- NPE-150S2: $1,400-1,650
- NPE-180S2: $1,600-1,850
- NPE-240S2: $1,800-2,100
- NPE-180A2: $1,900-2,200
- NPE-210A2: $2,050-2,350
- NPE-240A2: $2,200-2,500
Installation typically adds $1,800-3,500.
Bottom line
NPE-A2 240 is the no-regrets pick for most 3+ bathroom homes that want recirculation. NPE-S2 240 if you don't need recirc and want to save $400. See our Navien vs Rinnai comparison for the cross-brand decision.
