Thermocouples are a legacy Rinnai part. Used on pre-2014 R-series (R75LS, R85, R94LS) and some early V-series units with standing-pilot ignition. Modern Rinnai (Sensei, Sensei RX, RUC, RL, current V-series) all use direct spark ignition — no thermocouples.
Do you have a thermocouple-equipped Rinnai?
Check the model number and manufacture year. If your unit is:
- R75LS, R75LSi, R85, R85i, R94LS, R94LSi → thermocouple-equipped
- V-series (V53, V65, V75, V94) pre-2014 → may be thermocouple; check serial for date
- Anything Sensei (RU, RX, RUR), RL, RUC, or RSC → spark ignition, no thermocouple
If you have a Sensei or RL throwing Code 11, the part you need is the igniter or flame rod, not a thermocouple.
What a thermocouple does
In a standing-pilot system, the thermocouple sits in the pilot flame. Heat generates a small voltage that keeps the gas valve open. If the pilot blows out, voltage drops, gas valve closes — safety device.
Symptoms on legacy units
- Pilot lights but won't stay lit after releasing the gas valve button
- Pilot lights but main burner won't fire
- Pilot occasionally goes out for no apparent reason
Replacement (DIY-safe on legacy units)
- Shut off gas at the supply valve
- Disconnect the thermocouple lead from the gas valve (usually a knurled nut, finger-tight)
- Remove the thermocouple from its mounting clip near the pilot
- Install new thermocouple, route the lead, reconnect to gas valve
- Open gas, light pilot, hold gas valve button for 60 seconds, release. Pilot should stay lit.
Cost
Generic thermocouples (Honeywell, White-Rodgers) work on most legacy Rinnai units: $10-25. OEM Rinnai thermocouple: $25-50.
Should you keep using a legacy Rinnai?
R-series units date from 2003-2014. If yours still works, it's a candidate for replacement. The Sensei (RU) series will use 30-40% less gas with similar capacity, give you a fresh 15-year warranty, and add Wi-Fi connectivity. Worth budgeting for.
