Updated May 2026 · Rheem Water Heaters

The Rheem Professional Classic Plus is the contractor-channel residential gas line — distributed through Rheem-network plumbers and HVAC contractors rather than big-box stores. It splits the warranty difference between Home Depot's Performance Plus (6-year) and Performance Platinum (12-year), shipping a standard 8-year tank and parts warranty. The Professional Classic Plus is the line your licensed plumber will quote when called for a like-for-like atmospheric gas replacement.

The Professional Classic Plus lineup

  • PROG50-38N-RH60 — 50G atmospheric gas, the volume contractor pick
  • PROG40-38N-RH62 — 40G atmospheric gas, sized for 2–3 person households
  • Mobile-home variants (PROG30-30N-RH62, PROE30-2-RH95) — sized for manufactured-home installs

Why the Professional Classic Plus exists

Rheem maintains two parallel channels for residential water heaters: a big-box channel (Performance, Performance Plus, Performance Platinum at Home Depot) and a contractor channel (Professional Classic Plus through licensed plumbers). The contractor channel exists because:

  • Licensed installers prefer purchasing through a distributor relationship. The distributor handles warranty claims, parts logistics, and same-day pickup for emergency installs.
  • Warranty service economics differ. Big-box channel handles most warranty work through homeowner-direct claims; contractor channel runs through the installing plumber and the distributor.
  • The 8-year warranty positioning fits the contractor sales pitch: "longer than the 6-year you'd get at Home Depot, more affordable than the 12-year Platinum, with my labor on the install."

Performance Plus actually has a slightly longer warranty (9 years on paper) than the Professional Classic Plus (8 years). The contractor-channel advantage is the bundled install + service relationship, not raw warranty length.

How to buy Professional Classic Plus

You don't. The Professional Classic Plus is sold to licensed plumbers and HVAC contractors through Rheem-network distributors. If you want one, the path is:

  1. Get a quote from a Rheem-network plumber for a like-for-like atmospheric gas replacement
  2. The plumber will source the PROG50 or PROG40 through their distributor
  3. You pay the plumber for the bundled install (unit + labor + permit + parts)
  4. Typical turnkey cost: $1,400–$2,400

For DIY install, you can't get the Professional Classic Plus — pivot to Performance Plus 50G at Home Depot or Performance Platinum 50G for the warranty step-up.

Bottom line

The Rheem Professional Classic Plus is what your Rheem-network plumber installs when you call them for a gas water heater replacement. 8-year warranty, FVIR-compliant burner, contractor service network. Functionally equivalent to the Performance Plus on the water-heating side, with the contractor install relationship as the differentiator. For DIY shoppers, pivot to the big-box-channel Performance Plus or Performance Platinum. For full Rheem context see our Rheem water heater lineup.
