Rheem Performance Platinum 75-Gallon Gas Water Heater
Rheem Performance Platinum 75-Gallon Gas Water Heater Review
The Rheem Performance Platinum 75-Gallon Gas is the largest residential gas tank in Rheem's Performance Platinum line. Sized for 5+ person households or homes with overlapping morning demand that exceeds the 50-gallon tank's capacity. The 75-gallon class is uncommon in residential — most households fit a 50-gallon, and households needing more usually convert to tankless instead.
Specs: 76,000 BTU input (substantially higher than the standard 40K BTU on the 50-gallon Performance Platinum), 110-gallon first-hour rating, UEF 0.60, 12-year tank and parts warranty. Atmospheric vent. ENERGY STAR certified.
The higher BTU burner is the practical differentiator from the 50-gallon. 76,000 BTU produces ~70 gph recovery at a 90°F rise — versus ~37 gph for a 40K BTU burner on the 50-gallon. The combination of 75 gallons reservoir + faster recovery enables back-to-back showers for 5+ household members without depletion.
Right buyer: large family in a primary residence with sequential or lightly-overlapping demand. The 75-gallon avoids the install premium of tankless conversion ($1,650 vs $4,000) while serving substantially more demand than a 50-gallon. Wrong buyer: households of 1–3 (massively oversized), households with extreme overlap demand (tankless is the right tool). About $1,300 unit, $2,200 installed. Physically larger than 50-gallon (78" tall × 24" diameter) — verify closet dimensions before ordering.
