Marathon troubleshooting is all-electric — no gas valves, no LED flash codes, no thermocouples to diagnose. Failure modes are limited to elements, thermostats, and electrical supply. The composite tank itself almost never fails (which is why the warranty is lifetime).
No hot water at all
- Verify breaker is on. 240V double-pole. If tripped, reset once. If trips again immediately, electrical fault — proceed to step 6
- Reset ECO — red Emergency Cutoff button on upper thermostat. Remove upper access cover; locate red button on thermostat assembly; press to reset. See ECO reset guide
- Verify 240V at unit terminals with voltage tester (use caution — power must be on for this test)
- Test upper thermostat continuity with multimeter. See thermostat test
- Test upper element resistance with multimeter. Expected 10-16 Ω at 4500W (Standard) or 8-10 Ω at 5500W (Heavy Duty). See element test
- Persistent breaker trip: shorted element or shorted wiring. Test element-to-ground; check wire condition
Lukewarm water (hot water runs out fast)
- Lower element failed: upper section continues to heat; lower stays cold. Hot water recovery dramatically slows. Test lower element resistance. Replace if open
- Lower thermostat failed: lower element won\'t energize even though it\'s good. Test thermostat continuity at temperature below setpoint
- Broken dip tube: incoming cold water mixes at the top instead of dropping to the bottom. Hot water runs out fast. Replace dip tube ($5-15 part, 30-min DIY). See dip tube page
- Sediment buildup: rare on Marathon (composite tank doesn\'t shed corrosion products into the tank like glass-lined steel does), but can still accumulate from incoming water. Flush via drain valve
Hot water too hot
- Thermostat setpoint too high: verify dial setting. Factory 120°F
- Stuck thermostat: upper or lower thermostat closed permanently. Replace
- Wrong thermostat installed in a previous service — verify correct part number
Breaker trips immediately on reset
- Shorted element: ohm test from element terminal to tank shell — should be OL. Continuity = shorted; replace immediately
- Shorted wiring: visually inspect for damaged insulation between elements and contactor
- Failed contactor: contactor welded closed, continuous draw trips breaker. Contactor test required
- Wrong-rated breaker: installer used undersized breaker; trip-on-startup is the result. Replace breaker per Marathon spec
T&P valve discharging
- Thermal expansion — no expansion tank installed on a closed plumbing system. Install expansion tank
- Overpressure — house pressure regulator failed or set too high. Test static pressure (should be 50-80 PSI)
- Failed T&P valve — relieving below 150 PSI / 210°F. Replace
Tank leak from connections
- Inlet/outlet fitting leak: tighten union; replace washer if hardened
- T&P fitting leak: Teflon tape application issue; remove and re-tape
- Drain valve leak: tighten or replace
Tank leak from body
This is rare on Marathon — the composite tank doesn\'t corrode through. If you genuinely have a leak from the tank body (not a fitting):
- Visual inspect for cracks in the outer jacket (rare — typically impact damage)
- Call Marathon tech support immediately — under lifetime warranty, Marathon ships a replacement tank

No anode rod to worry about
Unlike Rheem, AO Smith, Bradford White, and every other standard tank brand, Marathon has no anode rod. There\'s no anode replacement schedule, no anode-related sulfur smell, no anode dripping into the tank. The polybutylene composite tank doesn\'t need anode protection — there\'s no steel to corrode. Skip every "check the anode rod" diagnostic step you\'ve seen for standard tanks.
Bottom line
Marathon troubleshooting is electrical: breaker → ECO reset → thermostat → element. No anode, no gas, no flash codes, no LED diagnostics. Multimeter is your primary tool. Tank itself almost never fails — lifetime warranty covers the rare case when it does.
