Symptoms of ECO trip

Critical: diagnose before resetting
The ECO tripped because something caused overheating. Resetting without diagnosing means the next ECO trip might damage the thermostat further, melt insulation, or push tank temperatures higher before tripping. Investigate first.
Common causes of ECO trip
1. Stuck upper thermostat (most common)
Thermostat stuck in closed position. Upper element fires continuously. Tank temperature climbs past 120°F setpoint until ECO trips at 180°F.
- Diagnosis: test upper thermostat continuity with multimeter
- If stuck closed, replace upper thermostat ($15-30)
- Within 6-year parts warranty
2. Sediment buildup insulating sensor
Less common on Marathon (composite tank sheds less sediment), but possible from incoming water. Sediment between thermostat contact plate and water-bearing surface delays heat transfer. Thermostat reads cooler than actual; element fires longer; tank reaches over-temp.
- Diagnosis: flush tank, then re-test
- If symptom resolves after flush, sediment was the cause
3. Wiring fault
Shorted wire bypassing the thermostat sends power directly to element. Element fires continuously.
- Diagnosis: visual inspection of element and thermostat wiring
- Look for melted insulation, damaged conductors
4. Wrong wiring after service
Recent service may have miswired the thermostat — bypassing the temp control.
- Diagnosis: compare wiring to the diagram on the unit or in the manual
- Verify L1-T1 / L2-T2 connections per spec
5. Low water level
If tank wasn\'t fully refilled after service, partial water column overheats quickly. Verify tank is completely full before powering up.
Reset procedure (after diagnosis)
- Power OFF at 240V breaker; verify with voltage tester
- Address the root cause (replace thermostat, flush sediment, fix wiring, refill tank, etc.)
- Open upper access cover; locate red ECO button on upper thermostat assembly
- Press firmly until you feel/hear the click. The button should now seat flush with the thermostat body
- Replace insulation and access cover
- Restore power at the breaker
- Open a hot tap; verify element fires and produces hot water
- Monitor over the next 24 hours. If ECO trips again, the root cause wasn\'t fully addressed
Repeated ECO trips
If ECO trips again within 1-2 days of reset, do NOT continue resetting. Repeated trips indicate persistent overheating that will eventually:
- Damage the upper thermostat permanently
- Risk scald at the tap (temperatures may climb higher between trips)
- Stress the T&P valve
- Potentially cause steam-flash conditions if T&P also fails

The ECO design
