Rinnai Water Filter Inline Sediment Pre-Filter for Tankless Systems Review

Rinnai installation guidelines specify a sediment pre-filter on the cold water supply line of all Rinnai tankless water heaters when well water is used as the supply source, and recommend pre-filtration for municipal supply in areas with visible sediment or aging distribution pipes. The Rinnai-compatible inline sediment pre-filter uses a 50-micron stainless steel mesh screen that traps sand, grit, and particulates before they can enter the Rinnai heat exchanger water passages. Sediment particles larger than 50 microns can erode the copper tubing walls of Rinnai heat exchangers over time and cause early pinhole failure. The stainless mesh screen is cleanable (backflush with fresh water every 3-6 months) and does not require cartridge replacement -- only periodic cleaning. The filter housing uses 3/4-inch NPT connections compatible with all Rinnai tankless water heater cold water inlet ports. Installation takes approximately 20-30 minutes using standard plumbing tools.
Pros
  • Cleanable stainless mesh -- no cartridge replacement cost
  • Protects Rinnai heat exchanger from sediment erosion
  • Required for well water Rinnai installations per Rinnai guidelines
  • 20-30 minute installation
Cons
  • 50 microns only removes coarse sediment -- not suitable for water quality improvement
  • Requires periodic backflush maintenance
  • Not a water quality filter (no chemical or biological reduction)
