First-use cleaning cycle
Before collecting any water for drinking, run one full blank distillation cycle: fill the boiling pot to the MAX line with plain tap water, add 1 tablespoon of citric acid powder (available at grocery stores), run the full cycle, and discard all output. This removes any manufacturing oils, metallic residue, or packaging odors from the stainless pot and coil. After the blank cycle, wipe out the pot with a clean cloth dampened with water. The unit is now ready for first production use.
Fill procedure
Fill the stainless boiling pot to the MAX fill line marked on the interior wall -- do not overfill above this line. Overfilling causes water to splash into the condenser coil before it distills, contaminating the output. Do not underfill below the MIN line -- the unit will run dry and the automatic shutoff will trigger prematurely, reducing output yield. Use cold tap water for filling -- do not use hot water, which accelerates initial mineral precipitation and can trigger the thermal safety cutoff before a full distillation cycle completes.
Carbon post-filter setup
Drop one VEVOR activated carbon sachet into the clean collection vessel before starting the distillation cycle. The sachet should rest at the bottom of the vessel under the output nozzle. The distilled vapor drips through and around the sachet, allowing adsorption of any VOCs that distilled over with the steam. Replace the sachet after 4-6 full batches (the sachet will be visibly darker from adsorbed material). Replacement sachets are sold in packs of 10-20 on the VEVOR website and Amazon at low cost per unit.
Operation and automatic shutoff
Plug the unit into a standard 120V outlet (dedicated outlet recommended -- the 750W draw is substantial; avoid shared outlets with other high-wattage appliances). Press the power button. The fan starts immediately; the heating element takes 5-10 minutes to reach boiling temperature. Distillate output begins approximately 15-20 minutes after startup. The unit runs automatically for the full batch duration (approximately 4 hours for 4L, 5-6 hours for 6L). When the water level drops below the element, the thermal cutoff activates automatically and the unit shuts off. Do not leave the unit unattended in the same room as flammable materials -- the outer surface reaches 40-50C (warm to touch but not burn-hazard temperature at normal ambient).
Placement requirements
The VEVOR distiller requires 6 inches of clearance on all sides for fan exhaust. The fan exhausts hot humid air from the condenser coil -- placing the unit in an enclosed cabinet or against a wall closer than 6 inches will overheat the condenser and reduce output quality. Place the unit on a heat-resistant countertop surface (not wood laminate -- the base reaches 30-35C during operation). The collection vessel sits to the side of the unit on the same countertop level -- ensure the output nozzle drips directly into the vessel mouth without the vessel being lower than 4 inches below the nozzle (longer drip distance increases VOC pickup from room air).
