Filter replacement and NSF certification
The Aquasana Claryum filter is rated for 450 gallons -- approximately 6 months for a 2-person household at 1 gallon/person/day. Replace at 450 gallons to maintain the NSF 53 lead-removal performance documented in certification testing. Operating past the rated life degrades lead and PFOA/PFOS removal efficiency -- the filter media becomes saturated and contaminants break through. The Aquasana app (available for iOS/Android) tracks filter volume and sends replacement reminders.
Genuine vs generic replacement filters
Only Aquasana-branded Claryum replacement filters maintain NSF 53 certification performance. Third-party "compatible" filters for the same thread and form factor are not tested to NSF 53 -- they may reduce chlorine (NSF 42 performance) but their lead and PFOA/PFOS reduction performance is unvalidated. For lead-sensitive applications (households with children or pregnant women), use only genuine Aquasana replacement filters.
