Gerber toilet trip lever (handle) replacement

The Gerber trip lever is the chrome handle on the front-left of the tank. Universal Korky 6071BP at $8-$12 from any Home Depot fits all Gerber residential models. LEFT-HAND threading on the mounting nut — turn RIGHT to loosen.

When to replace

  • Handle doesn't trigger flush (chain disconnected or broken lever arm)
  • Lever arm doesn't return to up position (spring failed)
  • Chrome finish corroded or pitted (aesthetic)
  • Handle loose at tank mount
  • Cracking sound during flush (plastic lever arm fractured)

Replacement procedure (10 minutes)

  1. Open tank lid. Set aside on soft surface.
  2. Disconnect chain from old trip lever.
  3. Behind tank, unscrew mounting nut — LEFT-HAND THREAD (turn RIGHT to loosen).
  4. Pull old lever out from inside tank.
  5. Insert new Korky 6071BP through tank hole from inside.
  6. Hand-tighten mounting nut from outside (turn LEFT to tighten).
  7. Connect chain. Adjust to 1/2" slack when flapper is seated.
  8. Close tank lid.
  9. Test 3-5 flushes.

Wicker Park one-piece top-mount

The Wicker Park uses a top-mount trip lever (handle on top of tank, not on the side). Standard Korky 6071BP may fit but shank length may be too short for the top-mount geometry. Use:

  • Korky 6072 longer-shank universal: $12-$16. Reaches through deeper top-mount position.
  • Kohler GP1011836 top-mount specific: $18-$28. Premium chrome with metal lever arm.
  • Gerber 21-318 top-mount factory: $25-$35. Exact factory match for color and finish.

Logan Square dual-flush button

The Logan Square model uses dual-flush BUTTONS on top of the tank (one for 1.28 GPF full, one for 0.8 GPF half) — NOT a trip lever. When the button assembly fails, replacement requires the Gerber GD-1280 dual-flush cartridge (sourced through Globe Union or plumbing supply, $45-$65). Korky 6071BP does NOT fit the Logan Square.

Common Gerber trip lever service mistakes

  • LEFT-HAND THREADING confusion: Turn RIGHT to loosen. Common DIY surprise.
  • Mounting nut overtightened: Cracks porcelain. Hand-tight only.
  • Chain too tight/loose: 1/2" slack target.
  • Wicker Park standard handle attempted: Use longer-shank Korky 6072 or Kohler GP1011836.
  • Logan Square confusion: Dual-flush button assembly, not a trip lever — needs GD-1280 cartridge.
