Gerber fill valve compatibility
Universal 2.5-inch shank across all Gerber residential models — Avalanche, Maxwell, Viper, Wicker Park, Logan Square, Hinsdale Compact. Fluidmaster 400A fits directly. The dual-flush Logan Square has a separate dual-flush cartridge (GD-1280) for the flush valve, but the fill valve itself is the same universal pattern.
When to replace
- Tank refills slowly (sediment-clogged diaphragm)

Replacement procedure (25-30 minutes)
- Shut off water at under-toilet shutoff valve.
- Flush to empty tank.
- Disconnect supply line from bottom of tank (channel-lock pliers).
- Sponge out remaining water.
- From inside tank, unscrew fill valve lock nut from underneath.
- Lift old fill valve out.
- Install Fluidmaster 400A: insert through shank hole, hand-tighten lock nut.
- Adjust valve height: top sits 1" above water line.
- Connect supply line. Hand-tighten + 1/4 turn.
- Position refill tube terminating inside overflow tube.
- Turn shutoff valve on.
- Adjust float cup slider for correct water level.
- Test 3-5 flushes.
Common Gerber fill valve service mistakes
- Lock nut overtightened: cracks porcelain. Hand-tight + 1/4 turn limit.
- Anti-siphon vent below water line: can siphon dirty bowl water back into supply.
- Refill tube not in overflow: wastes water; prevents bowl refill.
- Float adjustment too high: water runs into overflow continuously.
- Old supply line reused: replace at install ($5-$10).
- Wicker Park limited access: use longer wrenches and shorter screwdrivers.
Service interval
