Duravit toilet installation — designer-aesthetic German precision
Duravit install requires careful attention to dimensional tolerances (European-precision toilet/fixture combinations), Geberit in-wall infrastructure coordination (wall-hung models), and dealer-network sourcing for proper accessories. Most Duravit installs benefit from a plumber familiar with European-spec sanitaryware.
Floor-mount Duravit install (Starck 3 two-piece, 60-90 min)
- Shut off water at under-toilet shutoff valve
- Flush old toilet to empty
- Disconnect supply line
- Remove existing toilet, scrape old wax ring
- Verify floor flange at standard 12-inch rough-in (most US-market Duravit) OR European 5.9-inch rough-in if special-order
- Install new wax ring on flange
- Set Duravit Starck 3 bowl on flange. Press straight down. Verify plumb.
- Hand-tighten flange bolts
- Install Duravit-specific tank-bowl gasket on flush valve outlet
- Set tank on bowl, align bolt holes
- Cross-tighten tank-bowl bolts 1/4 turn alternately
- Connect supply line. Restore water.
- Test 3-5 flushes
- Install Duravit SoftClose seat (included with Starck 3)
Wall-hung Duravit install (ME by Starck — 3-5 hours, plumber + construction)
Wall-hung Duravit install is fundamentally different from floor-mount — requires Geberit in-wall carrier embedded during construction or significant retrofit.
- During wall framing (or significant retrofit): Install Geberit Sigma in-wall carrier between studs. The carrier frame attaches to floor + ceiling structural supports.
- Verify carrier load: Wall must support 700+ lbs combined (bowl + user weight).
- Route waste line from carrier to building drainline: 110mm (European) waste connection at carrier outlet.
- Run water supply to carrier: 1/2" supply line to the in-wall concealed tank.
- Finish wall around carrier: Tile, drywall — leaving service access panel for actuator plate area.
- Install Geberit actuator plate (sold separately — Sigma 60 chrome dual-flush at $220-$340 typical).
- Mount Duravit ME by Starck wall-hung bowl to carrier: Use Geberit-supplied carrier bolts. The bowl projects from the wall at the carrier's mounting height (typically 15-18" finished height — adjustable during carrier install).
- Connect bowl to in-wall tank: Supply pipe connects through the carrier opening.
- Test cycle: Press actuator plate to verify flush completes properly.
- Caulk around bowl-wall junction for finish.
Critical Duravit install considerations
- Tank-bowl gasket (floor-mount): European 4-inch pattern in some Duravit SKUs — do NOT substitute universal Bemis 7530 (3-inch). Use Duravit-specific gasket.
- Wall-hung Geberit carrier load: Wall structure must support carrier load points. Old construction or non-structural walls may not be adequate.
- European rough-in vs US rough-in: Most US-market Duravit ships in 12-inch US rough-in variants. Special-order European 5.9-inch rough-in variants exist but require US plumbing modification.
- SoftClose seat included: Unlike most US brands, Duravit includes SoftClose seat with most SKUs. No separate seat purchase needed.
- WonderGliss antibacterial glaze treatment: Some Duravit SKUs include WonderGliss treatment — special care instructions (avoid abrasive cleaners that scratch the glaze).
Common Duravit install mistakes
- Wrong tank-bowl gasket on floor-mount: Universal Bemis 7530 may not fit European 4-inch pattern.
- Wall-hung install without proper carrier load planning: Carrier mounting points must align with structural studs/joists.
- Old supply line reused: Replace at install — Duravit's premium engineering deserves new components.
- Forgetting to order actuator plate separately: Wall-hung Duravit requires separate Geberit actuator plate purchase.
- Tile pattern not coordinated with actuator plate: Plate is visible on finished wall — coordinate during construction.
