Vitamin C neutralization -- the chemistry
Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) reacts with both free chlorine and chloramines through direct chemical reduction. The reaction with free chlorine: Cl2 + C6H8O6 (ascorbic acid) + H2O -- produces dehydroascorbic acid + 2 HCl. The reaction with monochloramine (the most common chloramine form): NH2Cl + C6H8O6 -- produces dehydroascorbic acid + NH4Cl. Both reactions are instantaneous and complete -- unlike the slower equilibrium reaction that limits KDF-55 effectiveness against chloramines. Brondell's VivaSpring delivers these reactions at the shower head by controlling the ascorbic acid dissolution rate through crystal size, water temperature, and contact time in the cartridge housing.
Filter life -- why Vitamin C depletes faster
KDF-55 media operates through a galvanic exchange reaction where zinc and copper atoms are exchanged with chlorine and heavy metal ions. This exchange reaction is slow enough that a small quantity of media (2-4 oz in a showerhead cartridge) provides 10,000 gallons of service life. Ascorbic acid operates through a consumption reaction -- each chlorine or chloramine molecule permanently consumes one ascorbic acid molecule. As chlorine content increases, consumption rate increases. Brondell's VS100 cartridge contains a defined mass of ascorbic acid that is completely consumed at approximately 2,400 gallons. This is the chemistry reason why Vitamin C cartridges have shorter lives than KDF-55 cartridges -- it is not a quality difference, it is a reaction-rate difference.
VS100 vs Nayad -- when to choose each
Choose VS100: when filter cost is the priority, when you are comfortable with quarterly cartridge replacement, and when your water has typical municipal chloramine levels (0.5-2 ppm combined chlorine). Choose Nayad WF02: when replacement convenience is the priority (semi-annual vs quarterly change), when your water has higher chloramine levels, and when you want the additional pre-filter stage for particulate reduction. The Nayad costs more per cartridge but fewer annual replacements. Annual cost: VS100 ($45-$80/year for 3-6 cartridges), Nayad ($60-$80/year for 2 cartridges). The annual costs are closer than the per-cartridge prices suggest.
Skin and hair benefits -- evidence
The documented benefits of chloramine reduction in shower water: reduced eye irritation (chloramines are more irritating to mucous membranes than free chlorine at the same concentration), reduced hair protein degradation (chloramines break hair protein disulfide bonds, causing dryness and brittleness in frequently showered hair), and reduced respiratory exposure to nitrogen trichloride gas (a chloramine-related compound that volatilizes in hot showers and has been associated with respiratory irritation in pool lifeguards at high exposure levels). For households with chemically treated hair (color, keratin, relaxer), chloramine reduction from Brondell has the most objectively measurable benefit on hair condition.
