Brondell VivaSpring VSF-40 Filtered Showerhead
Brondell VivaSpring VSF-40 Filtered Showerhead Review
Brondell VivaSpring VSF-40: Carbon Filtration + WaterSense
The Brondell VivaSpring VSF-40 combines two attributes rarely found together at this price: WaterSense certification (1.75 GPM) and active chlorine filtration through a coconut-shell carbon cartridge. Most filtered showerheads sacrifice water savings for filter media space; Brondell engineered a compact dual-stage canister that fits within the standard head diameter.
Two-Stage Media
The VSF-40 uses a coconut-shell activated carbon primary stage paired with a KDF-55 secondary stage. Coconut carbon has a higher surface area than coal-based carbon used in many competitors, resulting in faster chlorine adsorption at 1.75 GPM flow. The KDF-55 secondary stage provides bacteriostatic protection inside the cartridge housing itself, preventing bacterial growth during idle periods (overnight, vacations).
Filter Life and Cost
The cartridge is rated for 350 gallons -- approximately 2-3 months of daily use for one person. Replacement cartridges (model VSF-40R, sold in 2-packs) cost around $20 per pair. Three spray modes: Rain, Mist, and Massage.
- WaterSense at 1.75 GPM -- rare in filtered heads
- Coconut carbon higher surface area than coal carbon
- KDF bacteriostatic protection prevents biofilm
- Affordable replacement at ~$10/cartridge
- 350-gallon filter life is shortest in category
- Needs cartridge swap every 2-3 months
