Buying an APEC reverse osmosis system is a 15-minute decision if you know the three variables that actually matter: how many gallons per day your household needs, whether your source water pressure is adequate, and whether you want remineralized output. Everything else -- stage count, housing color, tank shape -- is secondary. This guide walks through each variable in order.
Step 1: Calculate your GPD requirement
RO output rate is measured in gallons per day (GPD). The storage tank is the buffer that makes low GPD feel like instant delivery -- the tank fills slowly and dispenses quickly. Here is how to size:
- 1-2 people: 50 GPD is more than adequate. The ROES-50 tank refills multiple times per day and you will never drain it.
- 3-4 people: 50 GPD works; 75 GPD is noticeably more comfortable if you cook with RO water in addition to drinking it. The ROES-PH75 at 75 GPD is the right size.
- 5+ people or cooking-heavy households: 75 GPD minimum. Consider pairing a 75 GPD system with a larger after-market tank (5 gallon) for buffer.
- Ice maker from RO line: Add 25-30 GPD equivalent to your calculation. Continuous ice production can easily exceed what a 50 GPD system produces in a day.
The formula: daily RO water consumption (gallons) x 3 = minimum GPD rating needed. The x3 factor accounts for the 8-10 hours per day the system actually produces (pressure off at night, slow membrane rate, etc.).
Step 2: Check your supply pressure
APEC's ROES-50 and ROES-PH75 require a minimum 40 PSI supply pressure to produce their rated GPD output. Below 40 PSI, production drops and waste ratio worsens. Check your pressure with a $10 gauge on the cold-water shutoff under the kitchen sink:
- 50+ PSI: Normal. Either APEC model will produce close to rated output.
- 40-50 PSI: Marginal. Production will be slightly below rated GPD. Acceptable for most households.
- Below 40 PSI: Add a booster pump (APEC part ERP1000 or equivalent, ~$80). Without it, a 50 GPD system might produce 15-20 GPD, leaving you regularly out of stored water.
Low pressure is common in: well systems with declining static pressure, apartments with municipal supply drops during peak hours, and homes with aging pressure-reducing valves set too conservatively.
Step 3: NSF 58 certification -- what it means for APEC
NSF 58 is the certification standard for RO membrane performance. It requires laboratory testing against a specific list of contaminants -- lead, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, fluoride, nitrate, nitrite, radium, selenium, TDS -- and mandates minimum rejection rates for each. APEC's membranes carry NSF 58 certification, which means the contaminant removal claims on the box have been independently verified.
The WQA Gold Seal adds a layer NSF 58 alone does not provide: it certifies the manufacturing process, not just the component. WQA auditors visit the factory, test production samples (not prototype samples), and re-audit annually. This is the specific reason to prefer APEC over similarly NSF-58-certified competitors -- you are buying a product whose factory QC has been inspected, not just a design that was tested once.
Step 4: The remineralization decision
Standard RO output is 5-15 ppm TDS -- extremely pure but noticeably flat-tasting to many people. The mineral content of ordinary tap water (100-400 ppm TDS) contributes to what most people experience as "normal" water taste. When you remove 99% of that, some people love the clean neutrality; others find it unsatisfying.
Test your preference before deciding: if you have access to distilled water (essentially the same mineral profile as RO output), taste it. If it tastes fine to you, save the money and buy the ROES-50. If it tastes flat or strange, spend the extra $60-$80 on the ROES-PH75 with the calcite remineralization stage. The calcite cartridge adds calcium and magnesium back at roughly spring-water levels, raising pH to 7.5-8.0 and TDS to 30-50 ppm.
Tank vs tankless -- APEC's current position
APEC's current residential lineup is tank-based -- all ROES models include a pressurized 3.2-gallon storage tank. APEC does not currently offer a tankless pump-driven system (that segment is led by Waterdrop and Frizzlife). For most buyers this is not a meaningful trade-off: tank-based systems are simpler, cheaper, require no electrical connection beyond standard plumbing, and are easier to service. The tankless premium makes sense specifically for buyers with very little under-sink space or strong concern about waste water ratio -- for everyone else, APEC's tank systems perform identically in daily use.
