Before You Start: Compatibility and Safety Checks
Verify your toilet bowl shape using a measuring tape: elongated bowls measure approximately 18.5 inches from the hinge bolt holes to the front rim; round bowls measure approximately 16.5 inches. Most American Standard two-piece toilets are elongated-bowl compatible with the Advanced Clean lineup. One-piece American Standard toilets with skirted bases may require the optional adapter kit (part AC-ADP-01). The GFCI outlet requirement is 120V within 4 feet -- verify the outlet is GFCI protected by pressing the test button and confirming power cuts out. Reseat the outlet before installation.
Step 1 -- Water Shutoff and Existing Seat Removal
Close the toilet shutoff valve clockwise until it stops. Flush to empty the tank. Remove the existing toilet seat by locating the hinge bolt covers at the rear of the seat, prying them open with a flathead screwdriver, and unscrewing the hinge bolts from above while holding the nuts from below with pliers. Lift the seat and hinge assembly off the bowl. Wipe the bolt hole area clean and inspect the holes for cracks. If the porcelain around the bolt holes shows stress fractures, address those with porcelain epoxy before proceeding.
Step 2 -- T-Adapter Installation at the Supply Connection
The American Standard Advanced Clean T-adapter connects at the toilet fill valve connection at the base of the tank. Disconnect the existing supply hose from the fill valve. Thread the T-adapter onto the fill valve shank, verifying the rubber washer inside the adapter is seated correctly. Hand-tighten, then add one quarter turn with an adjustable wrench -- the brass adapter seals on the rubber washer, not on thread compression, so overtightening is unnecessary and risks cross-threading. Connect the existing supply hose to the bottom port of the T-adapter and the included bidet supply hose to the side port. Route the bidet hose to the rear left of the toilet where the seat inlet port will be located.
Step 3 -- Mounting Plate and Seat Installation
Slide the Advanced Clean mounting plate over the toilet bolt holes from the rear. The plate has adjustment slots to accommodate 5.5-inch and 6-inch bolt hole spacings. Insert the mounting bolts through the plate and bowl holes. Thread the wing nuts or hex nuts (depending on the kit supplied) from below and tighten gradually -- equal tightening on both sides prevents the plate from sitting at an angle. Slide the bidet seat onto the mounting plate until the locking tabs click. Connect the bidet supply hose to the seat inlet port on the left rear and hand-tighten the coupling. Open the shutoff valve and perform a leak inspection at all connection points before plugging in the power cord.
Step 4 -- Power-On and SpaLet Calibration
Plug the power cord into the GFCI outlet. The Advanced Clean seat will perform a startup self-test -- the nozzle will briefly extend and retract to confirm mechanical function. On the 1000 series, the pre-mist function will prime with a brief water pulse into the bowl. Sit on the seat to activate the occupancy sensor. Test posterior wash at minimum pressure, confirm water temperature is warm (the tank pre-heats during the startup sequence), and increase pressure through all five settings. Test the dryer function. On the 1000 series, test the deodorizer by pressing the deodorizer button and confirming the fan activates. Register the product on the American Standard website for warranty activation.
