Rinnai Heat Exchanger Descaling: Annual Protocol
Even with a water softener installed, Rinnai recommends annual heat exchanger descaling as part of the standard tankless water heater service protocol. Descaling procedure: shut off gas supply, connect a submersible pump + 5-gallon bucket + 3 gallons of food-grade white vinegar or citric acid solution (Rinnai part RCS-K descaling kit, $25--$35) to the flush ports on the cold inlet and hot outlet isolation valves. Circulate the solution through the heat exchanger for 45--90 minutes. Drain, flush with fresh water for 10 minutes, restore service. Annual descaling prevents the 3--5 year scale accumulation that causes heat exchanger blockage even in moderately treated water.
Rinnai Descaling Kit Components
The Rinnai RCS-K descaling kit includes: submersible pump, inlet/outlet hose set, and citric acid descaling solution concentrate. The pump connects to the isolation valve flush ports included on all Rinnai V-series, RL-series, and RUR-series tankless water heaters manufactured after 2015. Pre-2015 Rinnai units without flush ports require a licensed plumber to install flush port isolation valves before descaling can be performed. Cost for isolation valve retrofit: $75--$150 labor + $30--$50 parts through an authorized Rinnai service dealer.
Anode Rod and Rinnai Tankless
Unlike traditional tank water heaters, Rinnai tankless units do not use sacrificial anode rods -- the copper heat exchanger is not galvanically protected by magnesium or aluminum anodes. This means the primary protection for the copper heat exchanger is water quality treatment (softener or conditioner) plus annual descaling. There is no anode rod to replace or inspect on a Rinnai tankless. The only consumable maintenance items on a Rinnai in a softened-water home: annual descaling kit ($25--$35/yr), annual in-line filter screen cleaning (5 minutes, no parts cost), and 5-year gas valve service (licensed plumber required).
