Float switch replacement
The float switch is the most commonly replaced sump pump part -- it experiences more mechanical stress than the motor or impeller through repeated cycling. Signs of float switch failure: pump does not activate when water rises (switch stuck off), pump runs continuously without shutting off (switch stuck on). Zoeller M53 replacement switch: Zoeller part 10-0758 (ball float assembly). M98/N98 replacement: Zoeller part 10-0757 or 10-0743 depending on configuration. Check valve maintenance
The discharge line check valve is not a Zoeller component but is the first external failure point in sump pump systems. Check valves should be inspected annually -- a failed check valve (stuck open) allows water to flow backward into the pit after each pump cycle, causing the pump to re-cycle immediately and run more than necessary. A swing-check valve fails open when the flapper disc cracks; a spring-loaded check valve fails when the spring loses tension. Replace check valves every 5-7 years as preventive maintenance. Cost: $10-$25 for standard 1.5-inch PVC check valves.
Impeller cleaning
Zoeller's submersible pump impeller can clog with gravel, sand, or debris that enters the pit without a proper liner. If the pump runs but does not move water (hums but no flow), the impeller is likely clogged. Disconnect power, remove the pump from the pit, and access the impeller through the base of the pump (held by 3-4 screws). Clear debris with a stiff brush and water. An impeller clog does not indicate pump failure -- it is a maintenance event. If the impeller is damaged (bent or cracked vanes), the pump requires replacement rather than repair at this level.
