Float Switch Replacement
The float switch is the most commonly replaced GE sump pump component. Failure symptoms: pump runs continuously even with low water level (float stuck up), or pump never activates even when water reaches normal on-level (float stuck down or switch contact failure). GE sells model-specific switch assemblies -- match the part to your pump model number on the nameplate. Universal tethered float switches ($10 to $20) work on most GE submersible models but verify the cord length matches your pit depth. Replacement takes 10 minutes: unplug the pump, disconnect the switch wire from the pump body connector, and snap the new switch onto the outlet fitting.
Impeller Inspection and Cleaning
The impeller is a rotating disc with vanes that accelerates water through the volute. Reduced flow rate without a blocked discharge line often indicates a clogged or worn impeller. Remove the pump from the pit, invert it on a clean surface, and remove the bottom volute cover (typically 3 to 4 hex screws). Inspect the impeller for debris wrap or cracks. Clean debris with a stiff brush under running water. A cracked impeller requires full replacement; GE impellers are available as OEM parts or compatible aftermarket versions for most current models.
Mechanical Seals
The mechanical seal prevents water from entering the motor through the pump shaft. Seal failure shows as water weeping from the motor housing or a grinding noise as the failed seal allows shaft wobble. Seal replacement is possible but requires full pump disassembly -- most homeowners at this stage replace the pump rather than rebuild it, particularly if the pump is more than 7 years old. New GE pumps carry a 2-year warranty; seal failures within warranty are covered.
Discharge Fittings and Check Valves
The 1.5-inch discharge adapter on GE pumps can crack if the discharge pipe is over-tightened at installation or if the pump is dropped. GE sells replacement discharge adapters ($5 to $10); wrap threads with PTFE tape before threading into the pump body and torque by hand plus one-quarter turn -- no pipe wrench required. Replacement swing check valves should be PVC with a 1.5-inch socket connection; verify the valve body is rated for the pump pressure (most residential check valves are rated to 150 PSI, well above GE pump output).
