AO Smith 4SH05 -- submersible deep well water supply

The AO Smith 4SH05 installs inside the well casing below the static water level, eliminating the priming requirements and suction-lift limitations of above-ground jet pumps. Operating fully submerged, the water-cooled motor runs at lower temperatures than air-cooled alternatives, extending service life in continuous-duty applications. The stainless steel outer shell resists corrosion from the mineral-laden, occasionally acidic water common in private residential wells. A 7 GPM flow rate at 140-foot head covers single-home domestic demand from wells of moderate depth.

4-inch well casing compatibility

The 4SH05 is designed for 4-inch nominal well casing -- the minimum casing diameter for new residential well construction in most US states. It will also install in 5- and 6-inch casings. The pump body diameter is 3.5 inches, providing a 0.25-inch clearance in a 4-inch casing for water flow to cool the motor. If the well casing is 3 inches or smaller, a 3-inch submersible pump is required; the 4SH05 will not fit.

Drop cable and pipe requirements

The 4SH05 ships with 10 feet of drop cable (3-wire, 14-gauge). Deep well installations require splicing or purchasing an extended cable before installation -- size the cable for the total well depth plus 20 feet of surface run to the control box. Drop pipe is 1.25-inch male NPT at the pump discharge; polypropylene or PVC drop pipe in 20-foot sections connects to the surface pressure tank. A pitless adapter at the well casing wall routes the discharge pipe to the exterior without an open well top.
