Code 14 = Thermal fuse trip / overheat. A safety thermistor in the burner or heat exchanger area detected temperature above the safe limit and locked the unit out. This is a serious code — the unit will not restart until the thermal fuse is reset and the underlying cause addressed.
Almost always: scaled heat exchanger
By far the most common cause. Scale insulates the heat exchanger from water flow — burner heat can't transfer into the water fast enough, so metal temperature rises until the thermal fuse trips. The fix is a full descale. In severe cases, the heat exchanger is permanently damaged and must be replaced (dealer-only repair, $800-1,500 parts).
Other causes
Restricted combustion air
Blocked inlet (lint, debris) or undersized intake venting. Inspect and clean the air inlet filter.
Restricted exhaust
Bird nest, ice, or undersized vent. Inspect the exterior termination.
Low water flow
If GPM drops below activation threshold during a draw (clogged inlet screen, partially closed isolation valve), exchanger heats faster than water removes heat. Verify inlet water filter is clean.
Recirculation pump failure
On Sensei RX and Sensei+ with built-in pump, a pump failure during a recirc cycle traps hot water in the exchanger. Code 14 throws within minutes. See recirculation hub.
Reset procedure
- Power off the unit completely
- Allow 30 minutes to cool
- Power back on and attempt Level 1 reset
- If code returns immediately, do NOT keep resetting — the underlying cause is still present
What to do if Code 14 persists
This is one of the few Rinnai codes where you should call a Rinnai-trained installer rather than continue to troubleshoot DIY. Repeated overheat events cause cumulative damage to the heat exchanger. Call Rinnai support at 1-800-621-9419 or your installer.
Prevention
- Annual descaling — non-negotiable in hard water regions
- Water softener if hardness exceeds 11 grains per gallon
- Annual inlet filter cleaning
- Annual vent inspection
Warranty implications
If Rinnai's inspection on a Code 14 warranty claim shows heavy scale and you don't have maintenance documentation, the claim is likely to be denied. Keep receipts for descaling chemicals or service. See warranty hub.
Bottom line
Code 14 is the cost of skipping annual maintenance. Descale, then call an installer if it returns. Don't keep cycling the reset — you're accelerating heat exchanger damage.
