Reliance Error Code

Reliance Error Code 1 FLASH — Causes & Fix

1 steady flash on the gas valve LED = normal operation, no fault.

Updated May 2026 · Reliance Water Heaters

1 steady flash = Normal operation. Same status indicator as State, AO Smith Signature, and Whirlpool — unit is functioning normally.

What 1 flash means

  • Pilot is lit OR electronic ignition is ready
  • Gas valve in standby
  • No safety circuits tripped
  • FVIR sensor normal

If you see 1 flash but no hot water

1 flash means the heater is healthy — the problem is downstream:

  • Check thermostat setting on gas valve — set to 120°F or "C" (hottest is around "Very Hot")
  • Verify the gas supply shutoff valve to the unit is fully open
  • Test another hot tap (rules out a single fixture air-lock or cartridge issue)
  • Bleed air — open a hot tap upstairs for 60 seconds
  • Check mixing valve at the heater outlet (if installed)

Bottom line

1 flash = good. A hot water issue with 1-flash status is downstream of the heater (plumbing, mixing valve, thermostat setting).
