A Navien install is more complex than a tank water heater swap — and combi-boiler installs are substantially more complex than pure tankless. Skipping any item below voids warranty and creates downstream problems Navien support sees daily.
Gas line sizing (all Navien)

Undersized gas line is the #1 install mistake. Have a plumber do a gas pressure test under full load before commissioning.
Venting (condensing models — most of the catalog)
- 2" or 3" Schedule 40 PVC / CPVC concentric or two-pipe
- Maximum equivalent length specified in installation manual (varies by model — typically 60-100 ft for 2", longer for 3")
- Approved manufacturers: IPEX System 636, Heat-Fab, Centrotherm
- Concentric vent kit is cleaner-looking but slightly more expensive
Non-condensing models (NPN)
NPN-180U, NPN-199E require Category III stainless venting (not PVC). Significantly more expensive vent material; offsets some of the lower unit cost.
Condensate drainage (condensing models)
Condensing models produce 1-2 gallons/day of acidic condensate. Required setup:
- Condensate trap at unit outlet (Navien includes)
- PVC drain line to floor drain, sink trap, or condensate pump
- Neutralizer required if running to iron drain pipe or septic
- Insulate or heat-trace drain line through unconditioned spaces
Water softener / scale filter
Required above 11 grains per gallon hardness for warranty compliance. Even at 7-11 gpg, soft water dramatically extends descaling intervals.
Combi boiler hydronic requirements (NCB, NFC)
This is where combi installs go wrong most often. Required for combi boilers but NOT for pure tankless:
- Primary/secondary loop design — boiler primary loop circulates through a hydraulic separator or closely-spaced tees; secondary zones tap off via dedicated circulators
- Expansion tank — sized for system volume + heating temperature range. NCB units include a small built-in tank but most installs need an external tank
- Air separator and dirt separator — Spirovent or equivalent. Eliminates micro-bubbles and protects the heat exchanger
- Pressure relief valve — 30 PSI typical, separate from the unit's internal valve
- Backflow preventer — on the fill loop to the potable water
- Zone valves or zone circulators — for multi-zone homes
- Outdoor reset sensor — mandatory for outdoor reset to function; modulates supply temp to outdoor conditions
A combi-boiler install done without proper hydronic design will short-cycle, fail to deliver design heat, and have warranty issues. Use a heating contractor familiar with Navien combi units. See our dealers hub for Navien Service Specialists.
Electrical
Standard 120V 15A circuit. Combi boilers with multiple internal pumps may draw more — verify per model spec. Dedicated circuit recommended.
Permits
Required in most US jurisdictions for tankless and combi installs. Skipping permits voids warranty in some states and creates insurance issues.
Commissioning
- Purge air from gas line
- Open inlet/outlet isolation valves
- For combi: fill hydronic loop, purge air, set pressure (12-15 psi cold)
- Power on; verify display
- Set temperature and outdoor reset (combi)
- Verify condensate drain flowing (condensing)
- Program recirculation if NPE-A2
- Pair to NaviLink app
- Register warranty
Bottom line
For NPE tankless, Navien install is similar complexity to Rinnai — most installers can handle it. For NCB / NFC combi boiler, the hydronic side adds substantial complexity that generic plumbers often get wrong. Always use a Navien Service Specialist or hydronics-experienced contractor for combi installs.
