Whirlpool Thermocouple — Standing Pilot Diagnosis

Behind most 2-flash faults on Whirlpool standing pilot units. DIY-replaceable.

Updated May 2026 · Whirlpool Water Heaters

On Whirlpool standing-pilot gas units, the thermocouple senses pilot flame and keeps gas valve open. Behind most 2 LED flash faults on Whirlpool units.

Symptoms

  • 2 LED flashes on gas valve
  • Pilot lights but goes out when you release gas knob
  • Pilot stays lit briefly then goes out
  • Pilot flame visibly weak or yellow

Diagnostic before replacing

  1. Clean intake screen first (50% of "thermocouple" issues are actually intake restriction)
  2. Verify pilot flame envelops thermocouple tip
  3. Test thermocouple voltage: healthy = 25-30 mV; below 18 mV = replace

DIY replacement

  1. Gas knob to "Off"; wait 5 minutes
  2. Remove burner cover
  3. Disconnect thermocouple lead from gas valve
  4. Remove thermocouple from pilot bracket
  5. Insert new thermocouple — tip in pilot flame envelope
  6. Connect to gas valve (finger-tight + quarter-turn)
  7. Restore gas; light pilot
  8. Hold knob 60 seconds; verify thermocouple holds

Cost

  • Universal thermocouple: $10-20
  • OEM AO Smith/Whirlpool: $15-25
  • Pro: $100-200

Lifespan

5-10 years standard. Faster in dusty environments or hard-water regions.

Bottom line

Most common Whirlpool gas part replacement. Clean intake screen first; if doesn\'t fix it, $15-25 part + 45-min DIY.
