On Whirlpool standing-pilot gas units, the thermocouple senses pilot flame and keeps gas valve open. Behind most 2 LED flash faults on Whirlpool units.
Symptoms
- 2 LED flashes on gas valve
- Pilot lights but goes out when you release gas knob
- Pilot stays lit briefly then goes out
- Pilot flame visibly weak or yellow
Diagnostic before replacing
- Clean intake screen first (50% of "thermocouple" issues are actually intake restriction)
- Verify pilot flame envelops thermocouple tip
- Test thermocouple voltage: healthy = 25-30 mV; below 18 mV = replace
DIY replacement
- Gas knob to "Off"; wait 5 minutes
- Remove burner cover
- Disconnect thermocouple lead from gas valve
- Remove thermocouple from pilot bracket
- Insert new thermocouple — tip in pilot flame envelope
- Connect to gas valve (finger-tight + quarter-turn)
- Restore gas; light pilot
- Hold knob 60 seconds; verify thermocouple holds
Cost
- Universal thermocouple: $10-20
- OEM AO Smith/Whirlpool: $15-25
- Pro: $100-200
Lifespan
5-10 years standard. Faster in dusty environments or hard-water regions.
Bottom line
Most common Whirlpool gas part replacement. Clean intake screen first; if doesn\'t fix it, $15-25 part + 45-min DIY.
